Steffen Jäger

On 1 October, Steffen Jäger assumed his professorship in ensemble work/role development at the Max Reinhardt Seminar – Department of Drama.

Steffen Jäger completed his studies in the Max Reinhardt Seminar’s Drama Directing programme with honours. He has since gone on to mount numerous productions at the state theatres of Lower Austria and Vorarlberg, the Theater in der Josefstadt, TAG, Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, Konzerthaus Wien, Werk-X, and Theater Phönix Linz as well as auteur projects in the independent scene.

Alongside his theatrical work, Steffen Jäger is also active as a coach and public speaker on the topics of equal treatment and antiracist positioning in the acting field. He organises events such as antiracism workshops for municipal, provincial, and national theatres as well as empowerment meetings for BIPoC acting and directing students.

He began his teaching career in 2012 as a lecturer at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, teaching the basic role development course Grundlagen der Rollengestaltung. In 2017, he was appointed to a role and stage work professorship at the Anton Bruckner Private University Upper Austria. 2020 saw him also join the permanent drama programme faculty at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, and he served as a visiting lecturer at the Theatre Academy of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in 2021–22.

Jäger earned a diploma from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich’s renowned advanced training programme in theatre and music management (Weiterbildung Theater- und Musikmanagement) in 2019. He currently serves on the team that organises the specialist conference Zukunft Theater – networking for change, the latest phase of which was held this past June in Bonn.
