Childhood and Music Making

Exploring - Communicating - Improvising

Children exploring the world are driven by curiosity and are reliant on a secure bond with their parents or caregivers. Their sensory perception results from body awareness and from playful engagement with sounds, rhythms, their voices, various materials and instruments. The process of improvising and making music can be described in a similar manner: as a playful and sensual journey through the landscapes of one’s own discoveries. Sharing this journey with others in a musical dialogue leads to a special kind of communication that has the power to connect people.

How can the world of music be made accessible for children through processes of making music together? How can improvisation become a matter of course for all of us?

Researchers and practitioners who are interested in these questions within the field of music education for young children (aged 0-8) are warmly invited to submit their work for presentation.

Looking forward to welcoming you for what promises to be an exciting and valuable conference!

The 10th MERYC Conference will be hosted by the department of Music Education Research, Music Didactics and Elemental Music Making together with the Department of Music and Movement Education/Rhythmics and Music Physiology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
