Since Ein Sportstück (1998), Elfriede Jelinek’s theater texts have referred to Greek tragedy with inimitable consistency. Against the backdrop of right-wing populism, #metoo, and the climate crisis, the author crosses the gaze of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, thereby traversing and/or queering categorizations in terms of gender, class, and ethnicity.

Silke Felber describes Jelinek’s theater of (tragedy) traversal for the first time at the intersection of theater, literary, and cultural studies. In the form of a material-rich study, this foundational work brings to light gestures of lament and rage that point back to antiquity and, at the same time, to an uncertain future.
