Liebe Abonnent*innen!
Vor dem Jahreswechsel informieren wir Euch noch einmal mit den aktuellen Neuigkeiten aus dem MMRC.
Wir blicken auf ein abwechslungsreiches Jahr 2025 mit einigen Aktivitäten zurück. Einen Niederschlag fanden die verschiedenen Inhalte, die wir in diesem Jahr bearbeitet haben, in einigen Artikeln im kürzlich erschienenen mdwMagazin (sowohl online als auch in der Print-Ausgabe), auf die wir hier aufmerksam machen möchten.
Zusätzlich gibt es sehr erfreuliche Nachrichten aus dem erweiterten Kernteam des MMRC. Isabel Frey wurde für ihre Dissertation am Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie (IVE) an der mdw mit dem „Award of Excellence” des Bundesministeriums für Frauen, Wissenschaft und Forschung ausgezeichnet. Ein toller Erfolg und eine besondere Anerkennung!
Abschließend möchten wir bereits auf die ersten Veranstaltungen im Jahr 2026 hinweisen. Das Jahr beginnt mit einer Filmvorführung in Kooperation mit dem IVE am 16. Januar 2026, gefolgt von unserem MMRC-Symposium „Between Research and Activism”, das vom 12. bis 14. Februar 2026 in Wien stattfinden wird. Wir bereiten uns bereits intensiv darauf vor und freuen uns darauf, bald mehr Informationen mit Euch zu teilen.
Das MMRC Team wünscht allen Lesenden emöglichst entspannte Feiertage und alles Gute für das neue Jahr.

Preisverleihung
Isabel Frey erhält „Award of Excellence”
Auszeichnung für Dissertation an der mdw
Eine zentrale Aufgabe des MMRC besteht darin, als Plattform für Wissensaustausch und Vernetzung zu dienen. Dabei unterstützt das Center die akademischen Laufbahnen von Kolleg*innen und Mitarbeiter*innen mit großem Engagement und Begeisterung. Wir freuen uns daher sehr, wenn Personen, die dem MMRC nahestehen, mit ihrer wissenschaftlichen und künstlerischen Arbeit Anerkennung finden.
Aktuell dürfen wir in diesem Zusammenhang Isabel Frey herzlich zum Erhalt des „Awards of Excellence” gratulieren. Eine besondere Auszeichnung, die bereits einigen am MMRC involvierten Personen zuteilwurde. Isabel erhielt den Staatspreis für die im Fachbereich Ethnomusikologie als Teil des strukturierten Doktoratprogramms "Music Matters. Materialities, Knowings and Practices in Performing Arts" der mdw abgeschlossene Dissertation mit dem Titel: „Voices of Yiddishland: Diasporic afterlives of Yiddish folksongs“.
Der „Award of Excellence“ ist ein mit 3.000 Euro dotierter Staatspreis, der seit 2008 aus Mitteln der Studienförderung finanziert wird und die 40 besten Dissertationen des abgelaufenen Studienjahres ehrt. Die Vorschläge dazu werden von den Universitäten erarbeitet und vom Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung (BMBWF) verliehen. Die festliche Vergabe der Preise findet jedes Jahr im Dezember statt.

Filmscreening und MMRC Symposium
Das MMRC startet ins neue Jahr
Zum Jahreswechsel wird es etwas ruhiger um das MMRC, doch im Hintergrund laufen bereits die Vorbereitungen für die ersten Veranstaltungen im Jahr 2026.
Das Jahr startet mit einer Filmvorführung in Kooperation mit dem IVE, die von Isabel Frey kuratiert wird. Am 16. Januar 2026 wird ab 18 Uhr im Art House Kino (Future Art Lab) der Dokumentarfilm „Everything You Have Is Yours” der New Yorker Choreografin Hadar Arhuvia gezeigt. Der Film untersucht die Wurzeln der israelischen Volkstänze, die Arhuvia als Kind zusammen mit ihrer Mutter in den USA getanzt hat. Konfrontiert mit romantisierten Geschichten über ihre Großeltern, die in den 1930er Jahren als Siedler nach Palästina kamen, begibt sich die Choreografin auf eine persönliche Reise, um sich mit den Gründungsmythen und Verfehlungen des Zionismus auseinanderzusetzen. Im Anschluss findet ein Q&A mit Hadar Arhuvia via Zoom statt.

Interrogating Israeli Folk Dance: Filmscreening Everything You Have Is Yours
Das MMRC-Symposium 2026 mit dem Titel „Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies” (12.–14.02.2026) ist eine der Hauptveranstaltungen des kommenden Jahres.
Ziel des Symposiums ist es die aktuellen Inhalte des MMRC aus verschiedenen Perspektiven zu beleuchtet und in unterschiedlichen Formaten zu präsentieren. Dabei werden auch mögliche Strategien für die Zukunft formuliert und weiterentwickelt. Das international besetzte Symposium positioniert sich bewusst politisch und kritisch und möchte damit einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung der ethnomusikologischen Minderheitenforschung leisten sowie neue Impulse geben. Detailliertere Informationen zum Programm folgen Anfang Januar. Jedoch steht bereits jetzt fest, dass die Veranstaltung sowohl die Geschichte als auch die Zukunft des MMRC aufgreifen und kontextualisieren wird. Im Zentrum des Symposiums steht somit die Diskussion von Forschungsansätzen zu Musik und Minderheiten im Spannungsfeld zwischen Wissenschaft und Aktivismus.

Before the year’s end, we would like to update you on the latest news from the MMRC.
We can look back on a rich and varied year in 2025, with a number of notable activities. The wide range of topics we have covered this year are partly reflected in the articles recently published in mdwMagazine, both online and in print, to which we would like to draw your attention here.
In addition we are pleased to share the good news that associated researcher Isabel Frey has been awarded the “Award of Excellence” from the Federal Ministry of Women, Science, and Research for her dissertation at the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) at the mdw. This is a great success and special recognition!
Finally, we would like to announce the first events of 2026. The year will begin with a film screening in collaboration with the IVE on 16 January 2026, followed by our MMRC symposium, “Between Research and Activism”, in Vienna from 12 to 14 February 2026. We are busy preparing for these events and look forward to sharing more information with you soon.

Over the past few weeks, four new articles examining the work of the MMRC from various perspectives have been published in mdw Magazine. Together, they provide a comprehensive overview of the MMRC's activities, inviting readers to explore the topics in greater depth.
The articles, which address current issues facing the MMRC and, by extension, the field of ethnomusicology, are now available online. They reflect the daily challenges encountered in research and structural university work.

Isabel Frey receives “Award of Excellence”
Award for dissertation at the mdw
One of the MMRC's core responsibilities is to facilitate knowledge exchange and networking. In doing so, the Center supports the academic careers of its colleagues and staff with great commitment and enthusiasm. We are therefore delighted when individuals associated with the MMRC are recognised for their scientific and artistic work.
In this context, we would like to congratulate Isabel Frey on receiving the “Award of Excellence”. This special award has already been given to several people involved with the MMRC. Isabel received the state prize for her dissertation, which was completed in the field of Ethnomusicology as part of the structured doctoral program "Music Matters. Materialities, Knowings and Practices in Performing Arts" and is entitled “Voices of Yiddishland: Diasporic Afterlives of Yiddish Folksongs”.
The Award of Excellence is a state prize worth €3,000 which has been financed by study grants since 2008, honouring the 40 best dissertations of the past academic year. Nominations are made by the universities and awarded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF). The festive award ceremony takes place every year in December.

Film screening and MMRC symposium
The MMRC kicks off the new year
Things will quiet down a bit at MMRC at the turn of the year, but preparations for the first events in 2026 are already underway behind the scenes.
The year will begin with a film screening in collaboration with IVE, curated by Isabel Frey on the 16th of January 2026 at 18:00 at the Art House Cinema (Future Art Lab, mdw).
In “Everything You Have Is Yours”, NYC-based choreographer Hadar Ahuvia interrogates the roots of the Israeli folk dances she grew up dancing with her mother in the U.S. Confronting romanticized stories about her grandparents, settlers in 1930s Palestine, Ahuvia embarks on a personal journey to reckon with the founding mythologies and transgressions of Zionism.

Interrogating Israeli Folk Dance: Filmscreening Everything You Have Is Yours
The MMRC Symposium 2026, entitled “Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies” (12–14 February 2026) will be one of the main events of the next year.
The current content of the MMRC will be examined from various perspectives and presented in different formats. Possible future strategies will also be formulated and developed further. Taking a deliberately political and critical stance, the international symposium aims to contribute to the ongoing development of ethnomusicology and provide new impetus. More detailed information on the programme will follow in early January. It is already evident that the event will address and contextualise both the history and the future of the MMRC. The symposium will therefore focus on discussing research approaches to music and minorities in the field, exploring the tension between academic science and socially relevant activist research.
