nach einer kürzeren Sommerpause, melden wir uns mit den aktuellsten Meldungen aus dem Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC) und blicken mit Vorfreude auf die bevorstehenden Events!
Wie bereits angekündigt stehen zwei MMRC-Veranstaltungen in den kommenden Monaten an:
Unser Journal Music & Minorities hat eine neue Review-Editorin: Evrim Hikmet Öğüt von der Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. Herzlich willkommen!
Neuigkeiten gibt es auch von der ICTMD Study Group für Music & Minorities. Kai Tang wurde zur Vorsitzenden und Ioannis Christidis zum Sekretär der Study Group gewählt.
Wir möchten gerne auf das diesjährige European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM) hinweisen, bei dem einige unserer Kolleg*innen vom MMRC und vom Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie (IVE) mit Vorträgen und Präsentationen teilnehmen werden.
Und zu guter Letzt haben wir noch zwei weitere Veranstaltungsempfehlungen für Euch:
vom 02. – 03.10. findet das Symposium "Women’s Resistance, Art and Cultural Diplomacy" an der Central European University (CEU) statt und am 30.10. lädt das Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie zum Festakt und Symposium "60 Jahre Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie“.

„Ruža: Jekh hango so ašol – eine Stimme, die bleibt“
Der musikalische Nachlass von Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos
Wir laden Sie herzlich zur Präsentation der digitalen Ausstellung „Ružake Gila“ (https://ruzakegila.at) ein – eine Kooperationsveranstaltung des Romano Centro mit dem Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC).
Mit der digitalen Ausstellung „Ružake Gila“ wird das musikalische Lebenswerk der verstorbenen Sängerin Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos (1945–2022) gewürdigt und erstmals online zugänglich gemacht. Als eine der bedeutendsten Stimmen der Lovara-Lieder in Österreich prägte sie die Roma-Musiktradition und setzte sich für die Anerkennung der Rom*nja als Volksgruppe ein. Von 1995 bis 1999 war sie im Vorstand des Vereins Romano Centro aktiv.
Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung gibt es musikalische Beiträge der Familie – Ruža’s Kids – und eine Podiumsdiskussion mit Künstler*innen und Forscher*innen.

„Minority Voices in Civil Society: Exclusion – Inclusion – Solidarity in Music“
The 2025 MMRC Lecture
Wo verorten sich marginalisierte Gruppen in der Zivilgesellschaft und wie artikulieren sie ihre Belange? Welche Beiträge kann Musik zur Verhandlung von Zugehörigkeit und Teilhabe leisten? Mit welchen kollektiven kulturellen und musikalischen Praktiken können politische Macht- und Repräsentationsdynamiken hinterfragt werden, um Räume für transnationale Solidarität zu ermöglichen?
Ein Abend, der diese Spannungsfelder wissenschaftlich und musikalisch offenlegt und reflektiert.

Prof. Dr. Evrim Hikmet Öğüt zur neuen Review Editorin ernannt
Wir freuen uns, bekannt geben zu dürfen, dass das Editorial Board von M&M kürzlich Evrim Hikmet Öğüt zur neuen Review-Editorin des Journals ernannt hat!

Evrim ist ordentliche Professorin im Fachbereich Ethnomusikologie an der Mimar-Sinan-Universität der Bildenden Künste in Istanbul. In ihren Forschungsarbeiten und Veröffentlichungen konzentriert sie sich vor allem auf Musik im Migrationskontext und die Schnittstellen zwischen Musik/Sound und Politik.
Im Jahr 2020 erhielt sie ein Postdoktorandenstipendium des Wissenschafts- und Technologierats der Türkei und war als Gastwissenschaftlerin an der City University of New York tätig, wo sie Forschungen zur arabischen Musikszene durchführte.
Evrims Artikel “The Short History of Syrian Street Music in Istanbul: Challenges and Potentials” erschien 2021 als Teil des ersten Bands von M&M, der unter dem Thema “Music and Forced Migration” stand. 2022 wurde dieser Artikel mit dem ICTMD Best Article Award ausgezeichnet.

ICTMD Study Group for Music & Minorities
Bekanntgabe neuer Study Group Positionen:
Kai Tang und Ioannis Christidis
Die Wahl unserer MMRC-Mitarbeiter*innen Kai Tang und Ioannis Christidis zur Vorsitzenden bzw. zum Sekretär der Study Group on Music and Minorities of the International Council for Traditional Music and Dance (ICTMD) wurde vom MMRC mit großer Freude zur Kenntnis genommen.
Die Wahlergebnisse wurden am 23. August 2025 vom ehemaligen Vorsitzenden der Studiengruppe, Prof. Svanibor Pettan, während der Abschlusssitzung des Symposiums „Romani and Sinti Musicians: Between the State, Market, and Society” in Ljubljana bekannt gegeben.
Wir gratulieren Kai und Ioannis herzlich zur Wahl und wünschen ihnen viel Erfolg in ihren neuen Funktionen.

40th European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM)
Aveiro, Portugal, vom 16. bis 20. September 2025
Das diesjährige European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM) findet in Aveiro, Portugal, statt. Vom 16. bis zum 20.09. treffen sich internationale Forscher*innen aus dem Bereich der Ethnomusikologie und angrenzender Disziplinen, um ihre Forschungsprojekte zu präsentieren und zu diskutieren. Die inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte liegen in diesem Jahr auf Sonic Ecologies, den Zukünften der Ethnomusikologie und den Politiken des (Zu)Hörens.
Unter den internationalen Vortragenden sind auch einige Mitarbeiter*innen des MMRC und des Instituts für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie (IVE). Das MMRC verfolgt die Veranstaltung mit Spannung und wünscht den Konferenzteilnehmer*innen motivierende und inspirierende Tage!

After a short summer break, we are delighted to share the latest news from the Music and Minorities Research Centre (MMRC) and are looking forward to the upcoming events!
We start with two event announcements from the MMRC in September and November:
We are delighted to introduce the new review editor of our journal Music & Minorities: Evrim Hikmet Öğut, who is based at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. Welcome!
We also have news from the ICTMD Study Group on Music & Minorities. Kai Tang has been elected as the Study Group's chair, and Ioannis Christidis as its secretary.
We would like to draw your attention to this year's European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM), at which some of our colleagues from the MMRC and the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) will be presenting lectures.
Last but not least, we have two more event recommendations for you.
From 2 to 3 October, the Central European University (CEU) will host the symposium “Women's Resistance, Art and Cultural Diplomacy”. And on 30 October, the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) at the mdw will hold a ceremony and symposium to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The Musical Legacy of Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos
We cordially invite you to the presentation of the digital exhibition “Ružake Gila” (https://ruzakegila.at), a collaborative event organised by the Romano Centro and the Music and Minorities Research Centre (MMRC).
The digital exhibition “Ružake Gila” pays tribute to the late singer Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos (1945–2022) and making her musical legacy available online for the first time. As one of the most important voices of Lovari songs in Austria, Ruža played a key role in shaping the Roma musical tradition and campaigned for the recognition of the Romani people as an ethnic group. From 1995 to 1999, she served on the board of the Romano Centro.
Now, in collaboration with Romano Centro, the exhibition will be presented alongside musical contributions from Ruža's Kids and a panel discussion.

The 2025 MMRC Lecture
Where do marginalised groups locate themselves within civil society, and how do they express their concerns? How can music contribute to negotiating belonging and participation? What collective cultural and musical practices can be employed to challenge political power and representation dynamics and create spaces for transnational solidarity?
This event explores and reflects on these areas of tension from academic and musical perspectives. An evening dedicated to minoritarian alliances and solidarity.

Prof. Dr. Evrim Hikmet Öğüt appointed as new Review Editor
We are pleased to announce that the Editorial Board of M&M recently appointed Evrim Hikmet Öğüt as the new Review Editor of the journal!

Evrim is a full professor in the ethnomusicology program at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. Her research and publications primarily focus on music in migratory contexts and the intersection of music/sound and politics. In 2020, she held a post-doctoral scholarship from The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and a visiting research position at City University of New York, where she conducted research on the Arab music scene.
Evrim’s article “The Short History of Syrian Street Music in Istanbul: Challenges and Potentials” was published in 2021 as part of M&M’s inaugural collection on “Music and Forced Migration”. This article won the ICTMD Best Article Award in 2022.

ICTMD Study Group for Music & Minorities
Announcement of new Study Group positions: Kai Tang and Ioannis Christidis
We were delighted to formally receive the news of the election of our MMRC associates, Kai Tang and Ioannis Christidis, as Chair and Secretary, respectively, of the Study Group on Music and Minorities of the International Council for Traditional Music and Dance (ICTMD).
The election results were announced on 23 August 2025 by former Study Group Chair Professor Svanibor Pettan in Ljubljana, during the closing session of the Symposium on “Romani and Sinti Musicians: Between the State, Market, and Society”, and were followed by a warm exchange of gifts.
We warmly congratulate Kai and Ioannis on their well-deserved appointments and wish them every success in their new roles.

40th European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM)

This year’s European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM) is taking place in Aveiro, Portugal.
From 16 to 20 September, researchers specialising in ethnomusicology and related subjects from around the world will gather to present and discuss their research projects. The focus of this year's edition will be sonic ecologies, the future of ethnomusicology, and the politics of listening.
Several members of the MMRC and the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) will be among the international speakers. The MMRC is looking forward to the event and wishes the conference participants inspiring and motivating days!
