Greek-Canadian mezzo-soprano Frances Pappas has devoted herself intensively to contemporary music and Greek and Turkish art and folk songs in addition to the classical opera and concert repertoire. Her versatility has led to joint projects with renowned personalities such as Dave Brubeck, Yehudi Menuhin, Mikis Theodorakis and film director Percy Adlon. During her long engagement at the Nuremberg State Theatre, she sang all the major roles in her field, including Mélisande, Carmen, Charlotte (Werther), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Cenerentola and Nicklausse (Les contes d'Hoffmann). She has sung at the Schwetzinger SWR Festival, the Vienna Festival, the Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden, the Theater an der Wien, the Theater St. Gallen, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich and the Staatstheater Mainz. At the Salzburg State Theatre and the Stuttgart State Opera, she played Marie in Wozzeck, and at the Salzburg Festival she appeared as Meni in the world premiere of The Exterminating Angel (Thomas Adès), as Margret in Wozzeck and as Junon in Orphée aux enfers.
Frances Pappas has performed in concert at venues including Wigmore Hall in London and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, and with orchestras such as the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the MDR-Rundfunkchor. Many of her concerts have been broadcast on Bavarian Radio, BBC Radio, Radio France and CBS Radio.
She is co-founder and artistic director of Bridging Arts, a cultural initiative based in Germany and Austria. In this role, her commitment to diversity in the arts and support for underrepresented artists is a central part of her work. Bridging Arts has already received several prestigious awards, including the State Prize for Cultural Education from the State of Salzburg and the Culture Prize from the City of Nuremberg for innovative work in the field of music festivals and community art. In addition to her stage career, Frances Pappas is also a dedicated educator and has taught at the University of Toronto Faculty of Voice, the Glenn Gould School in Toronto, the Nuremberg University of Music, the International Opera Studio Nuremberg and the American Institute for Musical Studies in Graz.
