Julia Münster has been the head of the costume collection and costume workshop at the Department of Voice and Musical Theatre since 2023. After completing her training in 2016, the master dressmaker gained experience in the costume department of the Max Reinhardt Seminar and has remained loyal to the field of costume design and everything that goes with it ever since. In collaboration with directing professors, directing students and costume designers, she designs the costumes for all productions at the theatre. These include the final projects of the musical theatre directing programme and the annual productions at the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre. In 2023, Julia Münster was assigned the teaching of costume design, which means she has now also entered the field of teaching.
Her training and love of textile design began at HTL Spengergasse, Department of Art and Design, where she graduated with excellent results. She continued her education at the College of Fashion Design at HTBLVA Herbststraße, where she then deepened her skills in the master class for stage costume, also there. Even during her training, her artistic and craftsmanship was recognised with design awards. After completing her master's examination, she took over as workshop manager for the Viennese youth culture project Kids in Fashion, then began working freelance as a costume assistant for various productions (Märchensommer Steiermark, Sommernachtskomödie Rosenburg, Herbsttage Blindenmarkt – to name just a few examples). In the course of her freelance work, her path led her back to the Max Reinhardt Seminar and on to the Department of Voice and Musical Theatre, where she was able to learn about the work at the theatre from Anita Spanring. She was hired in 2018.
As part of her work at the department, she was able to bring her own designs to the stage as a costume designer for various opera productions, including Der Schauspieldirektor, Gianni Schicchi, La Cenerentola, Die Zauberflöte, Il Matrimonio Segreto, Bastien und Bastienne and Idomeneo. Both professionally and privately, her passion is the craft of costume and fashion. In 2024, some of her works were on display in the self-curated exhibition OFF STAGE.
