Dr. Michael Hammerschmid, Germanist Michael Hammerschmid grew up in Salzburg and studied German language and literature and theatre studies in Vienna. Since 2008, he has been teaching poetry and lyricism at various universities in Austria and abroad, including the Université Sorbonne Paris IV, the University of Vienna (Department of German Language and Literature and Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies) and the Institute of Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. 

He publishes poems, songs, short prose, radio plays, translations and essays, and since 2009 has been particularly prominent with poems for children and adults. He also writes poems for exhibitions in museums such as the Leopold Museum, the Sigmund Freud Museum and the ZOOM Children's Museum. Since 2014, he has curated and hosted the International Poetry Festival Dichterloh (formerly also Poliversale) at the Alte Schmiede in Vienna.

As a poet, he has been awarded (among other honours) the Reinhard Priessnitz Prize in 2009, the Heimrad Bäcker Sponsorship Prize, the Vienna Children's and Youth Book Prize in 2022, and the Austrian Children's and Youth Book Prize in 2023 and 2024.
