aktuellsten Neuigkeiten.
Die digitale Ausstellung "Objects and the Archive: Episodes in the Development of Music and Minorities Research" wurde über den Research Catalogue veröffentlicht.
Wir gratulieren Isabel Frey und Ioannis Christidis zur Verleihung des "Herta & Kurt Blaukopf Awards 2026" für herausragende Dissertationen an der mdw.
Im MMRC-Journal Music & Minorities (M&M) ist zudem die neue Special Collection of Articles mit dem Titel "Musik, Migration und Zugehörigkeit im Europa des 21. Jahrhunderts" erschienen.

Preisverleihung
Isabel Frey und Ioannis Christidis erhalten "Herta & Kurt Blaukopf Award 2026"
Auszeichnung für herausragende Dissertationen an der mdw
Am 17. Juni 2026 wurde an der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien zum vierten Mal der „Herta & Kurt Blaukopf Award“ für herausragende Dissertationen an der mdw verliehen. Rektorin Ulrike Sych übergab die Auszeichnung, die der Sichtbarmachung besonderer Leistungen im Rahmen des wissenschaftlichen Doktoratsstudiums und der Förderung von Early-Stage Researchers für ihre weitere akademische Laufbahn dient. Der Preis würdigt auch einen innovativen Methodenansatz.
Ausgezeichnete Dissertationen mit MMRC-Bezug:
- Isabel Frey mit ihrer Dissertation „Vocal Yiddishkeit. Postvernacular Transmission and Performance of Yiddish Folksong“ (Ethnomusikologie)
- Ioannis Christidis mit seiner Dissertation „Music in the experience of forced migration from Syria to the European borderland. Two case studies“ (Ethnomusikologie). Ioannis Christidis hatte mit diesem Dissertationsprojekt die erste Pre-Doc Stelle am MMRC inne.

Über den Award
Der Preis würdigt Herta und Kurt Blaukopf für ihre innovativen Arbeiten in der Musikwissenschaft und Musiksoziologie. Herta Singer-Blaukopf hat wichtige Beiträge zur Mahlerforschung geleistet und zeichnet u. a. für die Herausgabe von Gustav Mahlers Briefen verantwortlich. Kurt Blaukopf war der mdw über Jahrzehnte verbunden und gründete 1965 das Institut für Musiksoziologie. Das Ehepaar Blaukopf teilte die Erfahrung der Verfolgung durch den Nationalsozialismus.

Das MMRC-Journal Music & Minorities freut sich, die Veröffentlichung der neuen Special Collection of Articles mit dem Titel "Musik, Migration und Zugehörigkeit im Europa des 21. Jahrhunderts" bekannt zu geben, die von Anja Brunner als Gastredakteurin herausgegeben wurde. Die Special Collection enthält Beiträge von Nadia Kiwan, Ioannis Christidis, Andrew Snyder, Andrea Dankić / Erica Åberg und Louisa Hutzler sowie eine Einleitung von Anja Brunner. Before things get a bit quieter at the MMRC during summer, we want to share the latest news with you.
The digital exhibition "Objects and the Archive: Episodes in the Development of Music and Minorities Research" has been published via the Research Catalogue.
Congratulations to Isabel Frey and Ioannis Christidis for receiving the "2026 Herta & Kurt Blaukopf Award" for outstanding dissertations at the mdw.
The MMRC journal Music & Minorities (M&M) has published a new special collection of articles entitled "Music, Migration and Belonging in 21st-Century Europe".
Event announcements – save the date:
- The 10th Symposium of the ICTMD Study Group on Music and Dance in South-Eastern Europe will take place at the mdw from 23 to 29 September. Further information is available here >>
- On 6 October 2026 at 18:00, the presentation of the digital exhibition ‘Objects and the Archive: Episodes in the Development of Music and Minorities Research' will take place at the mdw.
- The MMRC Lecture 2026 is scheduled for 14 December 2026, at the mdw, and will be followed by a workshop on 15 December.

Award
Isabel Frey and Ioannis Christidis received the "2026 Herta & Kurt Blaukopf Award"
Award for outstanding doctoral dissertations at the mdw
On 17 June 2026, the "Herta & Kurt Blaukopf Award" for outstanding doctoral dissertations at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna was presented for the fourth time. Rector Ulrike Sych presented the award, which serves to recognise exceptional achievements within the framework of doctoral research and to support early-stage researchers in their future academic careers. The prize also honours an innovative methodological approach.

Isabel Frey for her dissertation "Vocal Yiddishkeit. Postvernacular Transmission and Performance of Yiddish Folksong" (ethnomusicology).

Ioannis Christidis for his dissertation "Music in the experience of forced migration from Syria to the European borderland. Two case studies" (ethnomusicology). Ioannis Christidis held the first pre-doctoral position at the MMRC during this dissertation project.

About the Award
The prize honours Herta and Kurt Blaukopf for their innovative work in musicology and the music sociology. Herta Singer-Blaukopf has made significant contributions to the Mahler research and is responsible, amongst other things, for the publication of Gustav Mahler’s letters. Kurt Blaukopf was associated with the mdw for decades and founded the Department of Music Sociology at the mdw in 1965. The Blaukopfs shared the experience of persecution under National Socialism.
