Journal Publication from the FWF-PEEK Project Spirits in Complexity

The FWF-PEEK project Spirits in Complexity (AR-821) has resulted in a new journal publication: Black Box Music by Thomas Grill et al., published in ECHO – Journal for Music and Performance Research (Orpheus Institute).

Leonhard Grond and Ruth Anderwald have published the article Accompanying Ignorant Generalists and Public Amateurs. Propositions for Experimental Pedagogical Approaches to PhD in Art and Doctoral Artistic-Research Projects in RUKKUU – Studies in Artistic Research, Special Issue No. 4 (2025), dedicated to Art Pedagogy (December 2025).

Conferences, Keynotes & External Presence

ARC at the ICTMD Annual Meeting

The Artistic Research Center (ARC) participated as a cooperation partner in the Annual Meeting of the Austrian National Committee of the International Council for Traditions in Music and Dance (ICTMD), held on 13–14 December 2025. The conference, organized by the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, focused on Artistic Research: Performing Ethnomusicology.

A keynote by Dr. Wei-Ya Lin and Prof. Johannes Kretz, supported by the ARC, contributed central perspectives of artistic research to the international scholarly and artistic exchange.

Prof. Johannes Kretz also delivered a keynote at the international symposium Impact – Improvisation and Creativity and Research-Based Education in Performing Arts at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, titled "Survival of the Friendliest – from transcultural comprovisation to sympoetic art practices".

Long-Term International Research Partnerships

Traditional Songs of the Indigenous Tao People (Taiwan)

The ARC is a cooperation partner in two closely connected research and publication projects dedicated to the traditional songs of the Indigenous Tao people of Lanyu Island, Taiwan. Both projects build on the FWF-PEEK project Creative (Mis)Understandings (2018–2023) and further develop its artistic research approaches to music, language, and cultural knowledge in Indigenous contexts.

The AR-Pilot project, The Sonic Beings Laboratory, has been completed. The final project report is published on the Research Catalogue.

ARC bei der ICTMD-Jahrestagung

Das Artistic Research Center (ARC) beteiligte sich als Kooperationspartner an der Jahrestagung des Österreichischen Nationalkomitees im International Council for Traditions in Music and Dance (ICTMD), die am 13.–14. Dezember 2025 stattfand. Die vom Institut für Ethnomusikologie der Kunstuniversität Graz organisierte Tagung stand unter dem Thema „Artistic Research: Performing Ethnomusicology“.

Eine vom ARC ermöglichte und unterstützte Keynote von Dr. Wei-Ya Lin und Prof. Johannes Kretz brachte zentrale Perspektiven der Artistic Research in den internationalen wissenschaftlich-künstlerischen Austausch ein.

Langfristige internationale Forschungspartnerschaften

Traditionelle Lieder der indigenen Tao (Taiwan)

Das ARC ist Kooperationspartner zweier eng miteinander verbundener Forschungs- und Publikationsprojekte zu den traditionellen Liedern der indigenen Tao auf der Insel Lanyu (Taiwan). Beide Projekte knüpfen an das FWF-PEEK-Projekt Creative (Mis)Understandings (2018–2023) an und führen dessen künstlerisch-forschende Auseinandersetzung mit Musik, Sprache und kulturellem Wissen in indigenen Kontexten fort.
