In diesem Newsletter der New Senfl Edition haben wir noch einmal die wichtigsten Ereignisse des Jahres 2024 zusammengefasst. Wir bedanken uns auch dieses Jahr für den regen Austausch und Ihre Beiträge zu den Veranstaltungen im vergangenen Jahr. Und natürlich freuen wir uns schon auf die Zusammenarbeit 2025.

Im Zentrum der Projektpräsentationen 2024 standen vor allem die verschiedenen Aspekte und Features unserer interaktiven Landkarte Senfl’s World, die laufend erweitert wird. Die Karte wurde einem größeren wissenschaftlichen Publikum erstmals im März in Aberdeen bei der Tagung Mapping Music History und – in Form eines Posters – bei der Medieval & Renaissance Music Conference 2024 in Granada zur Diskussion gestellt.

Im Sinne der Third Mission wurde sie im April 2024 aber auch bei der Langen Nacht der Forschung präsentiert, dem größten Event für Wissenschaft und Forschung im deutschsprachigen Raum, bei dem wissenschaftliche Themen auf verständliche Weise vorgestellt werden.

Da die Karte auch für Schüler:innen und Lehrpersonen interessant ist, soll sie zukünftig zudem in der Reihe der Angebote zur Wissenschafts- und Demokratievermittlung an Schulen zur Wissensvermittlung angeboten und sichtbar gemacht werden.

Senfl’s World verfügt nun auch über zwei historische Stadtansichten: Dank des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums in München konnten sowohl das Holzmodell der Stadt Nürnberg aus dem Jahr 1540, wie auch das Sandtner’sche Holzmodell der Stadt München (1570) eingepflegt werden. Beide Holzmodelle können auf Wunsch als Overlay über den heutigen Grundriss der Städte eingeblendet werden. Sie vermitteln so einen noch deutlicheren Eindruck von den historischen Gegebenheiten, von Wohn- und Arbeitssituationen, und machen nicht zuletzt heute verlorene Gebäude wieder sichtbar.

Im Rahmen der Zusammenarbeit mit Ben Ory und seinem The 1520s Project ist es Ben gelungen, das Fragment aus D-HRD Fü MS 9820 (SC M 42; NSE 2.56) zu identifizieren. Wie bereits im Katalog angenommen, handelt es sich um das Ende einer Motette. Nun ist klar, dass es sich um Senfls Komposition Nativitas tua, Dei Genitrix Virgo (SC M 61; NSE 2.27) handelt. Wir freuen uns, dass ein weiteres Rätsel in Senfls Werk gelöst ist, und danken Ben für die freundliche Mitteilung.

Im Herbst 2024 wurde in beiderseitigem Interesse eine intensivere Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut für Alte Musik an der mdw gestartet. Gemeinsam mit Iason Marmaras wollen wir die Werke Senfls wie auch die von uns erarbeiteten Editionen in regelmäßigen Abständen in der Praxis testen. Beabsichtigt wird damit eine nachhaltigere Pflege und Lehre der Musik vor 1600 an der mdw, wie auch in einer noch in einem breiteren Rahmen zu etablierenden Konzertpraxis in Wien.

[Edition]

Die Eingabe der Proprienvertonungen für das Stundengebet ist nahezu abgeschlossen. Aufgrund der Vielfalt der liturgischen Formen mussten wir uns bei dieser Arbeit verschiedensten Fragen und Problemen stellen. Bis Mai 2025 (Projektende) werden dann auch diese Editionsarbeiten der in NSE 8 erscheinenden Proprien zeitgerecht fertig gestellt sein.

[Ausblick]

In den letzten Monaten des Projektes wird das Team der NSE die erarbeiteten Editionen noch einmal einer intensiven Korrekturphase unterziehen und sich in einem Writing Retreat der Erarbeitung der verschiedenen Paratexte zu den Bänden 6–8 widmen.

Darüber hinaus dürfen Sie auf einen Blogbeitrag zur Komplexität der verschiedenen liturgischen Formen in NSE 8 gespannt sein.

Im Frühjahr 2025 wird der fünfte Band der New Senfl Edition erscheinen. Er enthält Senfls Magnificatzyklus wie auch die sieben mehrstimmigen Messen.

Nach dem Projektende werden voraussichtlich zum Sommer 2025 auch die Beiträge der internationalen Konferenz 1523 | 2023 – The Munich Court Chapel at 500 vom Sommer 2023 erscheinen. Eine erste Redaktions- und Layoutphase ist bereits abgeschlossen. Der Band wird in der Reihe Épitome musical bei Brepols erscheinen und von Stefan Gasch herausgegeben.

[Presentations]

The 2024 project presentations focussed primarily on the various aspects and features of our interactive map Senfl's World, which is constantly being expanded. The map was presented to a wider academic audience for the first time in March in Aberdeen at the Mapping Music History conference and—in the form of a poster—at the Medieval & Renaissance Music Conference 2024 in Granada.

In the spirit of the Third Mission, it was also presented in April 2024 at the Long Night of Research (Lange Nacht der Forschung), the largest event for science and research in the German-speaking world, where scientific topics are presented in an understandable way.

As the map is also of interest to pupils and teachers, it will also be offered and made visible in the series of science and democracy education programmes at schools in the future.

Senfl's World now also has two historical city views: thanks to the Bayerische Nationalmuseum in Munich, both the wooden model of the city of Nuremberg from 1540 and Sandtner’s wooden model of the city of Munich (1570) have been incorporated. If desired, both wooden models can be displayed as an overlay over the current floor plan of the cities. They thus convey an even clearer impression of the historical conditions, of living and working situations, and not least make buildings that have been lost today visible again.

As part of his collaboration with Ben Ory and his The 1520s Project, Ben has succeeded in identifying the fragment from D-HRD Fü MS 9820 (SC M 42; NSE 2.56). As already assumed in the Senfl Catalogue, it is the end of a motet. It is now clear that it is Senfl’s composition Nativitas tua, Dei Genitrix Virgo (SC M 61; NSE 2.27). We are delighted that another mystery in Senfl’s œuvre has been solved and thank Ben for his kind information.

In autumn 2024, a more intensive collaboration with the Department of Early Music at the mdw was launched in the interests of both parties. Together with Iason Marmaras, we want to test Senfl’s works as well as the editions we have developed in practice at regular intervals. The intention is to foster and teach music from before 1600 more sustainably at the mdw, as well as in a concert practice in Vienna that is yet to be established on a broader scale.

[Edition]

The input of the Propers for the Liturgy of the Hours is almost complete. Due to the variety of liturgical forms, we had to face a wide range of questions and problems during this work. By May 2025 (end of the project), this editing work for the Proper settings appearing in NSE 8 will also be completed on time.

[Outlook]

In the final months of the project, the NSE team will once again subject the editions to an intensive correction phase and dedicate a writing retreat to working on the various paratexts for volumes 6–8.

You can also look forward to a blog post on the complexity of the various liturgical forms in NSE 8.

The fifth volume of the New Senfl Edition will be published in spring 2025. It will contain Senfl’s Magnificat cycle as well as the seven polyphonic masses.

After the end of the project, the contributions from the international conference 1523 | 2023 – The Munich Court Chapel at 500 from summer 2023 are also expected to be published in summer 2025. An initial editorial and layout phase has already been completed. The volume will be published in the Épitome musical series by Brepols and edited by Stefan Gasch.
