Im ersten Newsletter der New Senfl Edition haben wir für Sie die wichtigsten Ereignisse des Jahres 2023 zusammengefasst. Zunächst aber bedanken wir uns nochmals für den regen Austausch und Ihre Beiträge zu den Veranstaltungen im vergangenen Jahr und freuen und schon auf die Zusammenarbeit 2024.

Am 4. April 2023 fand mit Blick auf die fertig gestellte Neuedition von Senfls Magnificatvertonungen der interdisziplinäre Workshop (Ludwig Senfls) Magnificat-Vertonungen im Zeitalter der Reformation statt. Grundgedanke dieses Treffens mit Heidrun Lange-Krach (Frankfurt/Main, DE), Christiane Wiesenfeldt (Heidelberg, DE), Stefan Michels (Frankfurt/Main, DE), Matthias Lundberg (Uppsala, SE), Andreas Pfisterer (Erlangen-Würzburg, DE) war es, diese Gattung aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu betrachten. Angesprochen wurden daher etwa Themen wie die Ikonographie der Heimsuchung Mariä, die Haltung der frühen Reformatoren zu diesem Text und mögliche Implikationen für die musikalische Umsetzung, aber auch aufführungspraktische Aspekte (nicht nur in München).

Im Jahr 2023 jährte sich die Anstellung Ludwig Senfls an der Münchner Hofkapelle zum 500. Mal. Aus diesem Anlass fand die von Stefan Gasch organisierte internationale Tagung The Munich Court Chapel at 500: Tradition, Devotion, Representation vom 31. Juli–2. August 2023 in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek in München statt. An drei vollen Tagen, die jeweils von einer „morning lecture“ (Larry Silver, Nicole Schwindt, Joshua Rifkin) eröffnet wurden, diskutierten Forscher:innen aus unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven die bislang kaum erforschte Hofkultur von Herzog Wilhelm IV. und Jacobäa von Baden.

Parallel zur Tagung fand die Kabinettpräsentation ... quia Musicam colunt. Wilhelm IV., Ludwig Senfl und die Anfänge der Münchner Hofkapelle vor dem Lesesaal Musik/Karten/Bilder der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek München statt (Organisation: Stefan Gasch, Veronika Giglberger, Bernhard Lutz).

Die Ausstellung mit zahlreichen Quellen und Musikbeispielen ist auf der Plattform Google Arts & Culture kostenfrei zugänglich.

Rechtzeitig zur Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference 2023 konnte der vierte Band der New Senfl Editiondruckfrisch vorgelegt werden. Mit der Publikation sämtlicher sechs- und achtstimmigen Motetten sowie aller Kanons schließt der Band die Neuausgabe der Motetten Ludwig Senfls ab. Damit liegen nun erstmals alle 105 erhaltenen Motetten sowie die sechs als reine Kanons konzipierten Kompositionen in einer kritischen Edition vor.

Wie alle bisher erschienenen Bände können Sie auch NSE 4 kostenfrei auf der Seite des FWF wie auch auf unserer Webseite herunterladen.

Der fünfte Band der New Senfl Edition, der Neueditionen der Magnificatvertonungen und Messordinarien beinhalten wird, wird derzeit zum Druck vorbereitet.

[Stand der Edition]

Neben der Drucklegung von NSE 4 haben wir uns im vergangenen Jahr auf die Fertigstellung des Manuskriptes von NSE 6 konzentriert. Der Band enthält Proprienvertonungen zur Messe für die Hochfeste des Kirchenjahres (Temporale) sowie Marienfeste. Dabei war es unerlässlich, nicht nur das Setzen von Akzidentien („musica ficta“) grundsätzlich zu überdenken, sondern auch die Editionsrichtlinien zu überarbeiten und an die (für die NSE neue) Gattung anzupassen. Parallel dazu haben wir mit der Neuedition der Messproprien für die Heiligenfeste des Kirchenjahres (Sanctorale) und die Commune Sanctorum begonnen. Diese Sätze werden als NSE 7 erscheinen.

[Ausblick 2024]

Nach den Workshops und Tagungen im vergangenen Jahr wird 2024 vor allem von der Neuedition von Senfls Officiumsproprien geprägt sein. Trotzdem wird einige Neuigkeiten zu berichten geben und wir freuen uns schon darauf, Sie im April in den SenflNews 2 über ein anderes Großprojekt zu informieren, das ebenfalls 2023 gestartet wurde.

On 4 April 2023, the interdisciplinary workshop (Ludwig Senfl’s) Magnificat settings in the age of the Reformation took place in view of the completed new edition of Senfl’s Magnificat settings. The basic idea of this meeting with Heidrun Lange-Krach (Frankfurt/Main, DE), Christiane Wiesenfeldt (Heidelberg, DE), Stefan Michels (Frankfurt/Main, DE), Matthias Lundberg (Uppsala, SE), and Andreas Pfisterer (Erlangen-Würzburg, DE) was to look at the genre of the Magnificat from different perspectives. Topics such as the iconography of the Visitation of Mary, the attitude of the early reformers to this text and possible implications for the musical realisation, but also aspects of performance practice (not only in Munich) were addressed.

The year 2023 marked the 500th anniversary of Ludwig Senfl’s appointment to the Munich Court Chapel. To mark the occasion, the international conference The Munich Court Chapel at 500: Tradition, Devotion, Representation, organised by Stefan Gasch, took place from 31 July to 2 August 2023 at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Over three full days—each opened by a morning lecture (Larry Silver, Nicole Schwindt, Joshua Rifkin)—researchers discussed the hitherto little-researched court culture of Duke William IV and Jacobäa of Baden from a wide variety of perspectives.

Parallel to the conference, the cabinet presentation ... quia Musicam colunt. Wilhelm IV, Ludwig Senfl and the beginnings of the Munich court chapel took place in the corridor in front of the reading room Music/Maps/Pictures of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München (organisation: Stefan Gasch, Veronika Giglberger, Bernhard Lutz).

The fourth volume of the New Senfl Edition could be presented hot off the press just in time for the 2023 Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference. With the publication of all six- and eight-part motets as well as all canons, the volume completes the new edition of Ludwig Senfl’s motets. This is the first time that all 105 surviving motets and the six compositions conceived purely as canons have been published in a critical edition.

Like all previously published volumes, NSE 4 can be downloaded free of charge from the FWF website as well as from our website.

The fifth volume of the New Senfl Edition, which will include new editions of the Magnificat settings and Mass Ordinaries, is currently being prepared for printing.

[status of the edition]

In addition to the printing of NSE 4, last year we concentrated on finalising the manuscript of NSE 6. The volume contains settings of Propers for the Mass for the high feasts of the church year (Temporale) as well as Marian feasts. It was essential not only to fundamentally rethink the setting of accidentals (‘musica ficta’), but also to revise the editorial guidelines and adapt them to the genre (new for the NSE). At the same time, we have begun work on a new edition of the Mass Propers for the Saints Feasts of the Church Year (Sanctorale) and the Commune Sanctorum. These cycles will be published as NSE 7.

[outlook 2024]

After last year’s workshops and conferences, 2024 will mainly be characterised by the new edition of Senfl’s Propers for the Office. Nevertheless, there will be some news to report, and we are already looking forward to informing you in April in SenflNews 2 about another major project that was also launched in 2023.
