Angesichts des 30. Jahrestages der Anerkennung der Rom*nja als Volksgruppe in Österreich legt die MMRC Lecture 2023 einen Schwerpunkt auf den Kampf um Anerkennung und Selbstbestimmung durch Musik und kollektive Bewegungen. In der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Trauma einer langen Geschichte von Diskriminierung und Genozid werden musikalische Praktiken und kollektives Handeln zu einem wichtigen Moment der Erinnerung und Heilung - und zu einem Aufruf zum Empowerment von Rom*nja.

- Keynote: Ioanida Costache (Stanford University, California), "Sound, Race, and Romani Subjectivity"
- Response: Mirjam Karoly (Honorary Board Member, Romano Centro), "The fight for justice and recognition of the Roma Holocaust"
- Musikalischer Beitrag: Mindj Panther (Simonida Selimović und Sandra Selimović)

Die internationale Konferenz "Music, Migration, Belonging/s in 21st-Century Europe" fragt nach Verbindungen von Musik, Migration und Zugehörigkeiten und thematisiert die Vielfältigkeit, Widersprüche und Dynamiken im Bereich der Musik von migrierten Individuen und Gruppen. Es wird speziell das Konzept der Zugehörigkeit/en auf seine Brauchbarkeit für Musikforschung rund um Themen der Migration diskutiert.
Die Konferenz ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem MMRC und dem Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie (IVE) und wird im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes "Women Musicians from Syria: Performance, Networks, Belonging/s after Migration" veranstaltet (Projektleitung Ass.-Prof. Dr. Anja Brunner, gefördert vom Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds (FWF)).

In light of the 30th anniversary of the recognition of Rom*nja as Volksgruppe in Austria, the 2023 MMRC Lecture puts a focus on struggles for self-/recognition through music and collective movements. In dealing with trauma as part of a long history of discrimination and genocide, musical performance and collective action become an important moment of remembrance and healing - and a call for Romani empowerment.

The international conference "Music, Migration, Belonging/s in 21st-Century Europe" explores the connections between music, migration and belongings and addresses the diversity, contradictions and dynamics in the field of music of migrated individuals and groups. Specifically, the concept of belonging/s will be discussed for its usefulness in music research around themes of migration.
The conference is a cooperation between the MMRC and the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) and is organized in the framework of the research project "Women Musicians from Syria: Performance, Networks, Belonging/s after Migration" (project leader Ass.-Prof. Dr. Anja Brunner, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)).
