Materiality of Adaptation

In this guest lecture, I will share my thoughts as a composer and performer, focusing on my interest in designing and exploring complex systems. I will present compositions that examine how one can create constellations or networks of mutually interacting materialities, including human performers, algorithms, sound synthesis methods, and compositional decisions. A key focus will be my recent composition Phasenregelkreis (Phase Locked Loop) for three performers, adaptive oscillators, and visualisation. Additionally, we will engage in a hands-on exploration of adaptive systems, discussing their implementation and delving into their rich musical and timbral possibilities. Guests are welcome!
Luc Döbereiner (* 1984) is a composer of instrumental and electronic music. He is Professor of AI in Composition and Sound Synthesis at the University of Music Trossingen. He studied at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague and received his PhD from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. His work deals with compositional models, algorithms, non-standard sound synthesis, improvisation, timbre, materiality, feedback systems, artificial intelligence and complex systems in musical composition and sound art. His music has been performed by numerous ensembles and soloists in Europe, and he has published his scholarly work in journals such as Computer Music Journal, Organised Sound, and Contemporary Music Review. He has taught at the Hochschule der Künste Bern, the Universität der Künste Berlin, and the FU Berlin, and has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Research in New Music at the University of Huddersfield and at the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics Graz. Döbereiner is part of the duos End of Text together with Ludvig Elblaus, NOR together with Martin Lorenz and ONE ON ONE with Karlheinz Essl. He is also part of the FWF research project Speculative Sound Synthesis.
