In this lecture-concert, Yiddish musicians and researchers Isabel Frey and Benjy Fox-Rosen reflect on their attempts to challenge the so-called "Theater of Memory“, a mode through which Jewish culture is introduced and instrumentalized for hegemonic cultural narratives.
They question the ways that kitsch dresses up as traditional, that Jews are often billed as more authentic Yiddish singers than their non-Jewish colleagues, that something sounds Jewish, that someone can understand a song without understanding its text and other issues that confront a Yiddish singer when performing in the German-speaking world. Through performance and reflection on popular and less popular Yiddish songs, Frey and Fox-Rosen address themes such as nostalgia, collective memory, the heritage industry, minority identities and nationalism.
This event is held in cooperation with the Cultural Heritage Studies Program of the Central European University (CEU).
