The conference Spaces of Musical Cultures: From Bedrooms to Cities focuses on the manifold interplay of (built) space, place, music and social interaction. Its starting point is the insight that musical practice – producing, performing, mediating and listening to music – does not take place in a vacuum, but in specific spatial and socio-cultural settings, the connections and conditions of which deserve closer investigation. The conference’s aim is to illuminate a wide range of constellations.
Moreover, the conference explores the relationship between the city and its music-cultural spaces as well as questions of cultural differences and social inequality and the significance of digital technologies for producing and listening to music, which have become even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic.
