Università di Cagliari. Udine: Nota.

This book is a first, partial contribution on Sardinian multipart singing to the EVA series. The volume does not intend to be an exhaustive guide but rather highlights key aspects of the variety and complexity found in multipart singing practices across the island, Sardinia.

It explores an essential distinction between two principles of performance: multipart singing adopting inclusive patterns (those that offer possibility for anyone interested to participate), and multipart singing based on exclusive patterns (those mastered only by selected specialist groups who comprise a predetermined number of performers). The volume and the audio-visual anthology are produced as part of the TeDiMuS (Digital Technologies and Multipart Singing in Sardinia) project, funded by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia (Regional Law 7/2007, for the "Promotion of scientific research and technological innovation in Sardinia"), and carried out with the support of Labimus (Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Music of the Department of Humanities, Languages and Cultural Heritage of the University of Cagliari).

In this publication are presented various Lithuanian multipart singing practices. The main focus is on the singers, concentrating on their own reflections regarding the music they make. The idea of paying increased attention to the voice emerged naturally from almost 35 years of interacting with them. Not only did the variety of timbres catch the listener’s attention, but also the singers' own metaphoric characterizations of the voice "as if from a barrel". This also applies to the harmonization of voices when singing in a group "the voices stick together like glue". Some explanations describe not only the importance of singing as a joyous "coming together", but also reveal the singers' admiration for its power and great resonance: “even the lamps would go out when we sang.”
     The concept
all songs are from life is revealed in this publication through sound, accompanied by the reflections of the singers. All the songs were once sung in their parents' homes, while working in the fields, or fighting for Lithuania's independence, and are retained in memory to this day, becoming part of the collective singing practice within the communities. Singing is the basis of the local people's existence: “Not singing is the same as not living.”

Die bisherigen Untersuchungen erfassen folgende Themen: Multipart Singing in the Balkans and the Mediterranean (EV I) , Cultural Listening and Local Discourse in Multipart Singing Traditions in Europe (EV II), The Instrumentation and Instrumentalization of Sound (EV III), Multipart Instrumental Music. Soloist and Ensemble Traditions (EV IV), Music for Dance (EV 5) und Singing, Song and Sound (EV VI).
