Croatia

von Marko Kölbl

The traditional music of Croatia features a diversity on regional styles in vocal music, instrumental music and dance. These traditions are grounded in both everyday practice and institutionalized folklore and furthermore are subject to a longstanding research tradition. Research on traditional music of Croatia at the IVE is neatly connected to research on Burgenland Croatian music as well as research on music and migration in relation to former Yugoslavia. Marko Kölbl conducted field research in Croatian regions, specifically Dalmatia and Herzegovina, and archival research in the historical collection of the Institute for Folkloristics and Ethnology Zagreb, an important research partner of our department.

Next to traditional music, Croatian popular music constitutes an important field of research. The research is directily connected to the artistic teaching at the department – the focus lies on traditional vocal forms and exceeds a frame of national borders.

The ICTM Study Group on Music and Dance in South-Eastern Europe constitutes an important network and form for scholarly exchange and the presentation of research.
