JOHANNES MEISSL, violin
Johannes Meissl studied at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Wolfgang Schneiderhan, Gerhart Hetzel, and Hatto Beyerle. He completed his degree with honours and an honorary prize, thereafter continuing his studies with the LaSalle Quartet in the USA. Since 1982, he has been a member of Vienna’s Artis Quartet, with which he has made regular appearances in the most renowned concert halls and at the most important festivals. The ensemble has received numerous prizes (Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d’Or, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, etc.) for its over 35 recordings. Since 1988, the quartet has had a successful concert series at the Musikverein in Vienna.
Johannes Meissl also concertises as a soloist and as part of a wide variety of
chamber music projects. He is a professor at the mdw, head of the Joseph Haydn Department of Chamber Music, Historical Performance and Contemporary
Performance, artistic director of isa, and – together with Hatto Beyerle – artistic director of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA). Since June of 2015, he has also chaired the University Senate of the mdw. In his artistic and educational work, he seeks out links to various areas of fine art, literature, cultural history, music analysis and philosophy. Meissl teaches worldwide at numerous summer academies and chamber music courses. Many of his students have won prizes at international competitions such as the ARD Competition in Munich. Meissl has also been the artistic producer of numerous chamber music recordings by young quartets that have gone on to win awards such Echo-Klassik.
Over the past few years, Johannes Meissl has also successfully devoted himself to conducting, and he now appears regularly with various orchestras in Austria,
Japan, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, and Romania.
