Research Associate (praedoc / doctoral student)

as part of a research project run by the Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil (IWK) in cooperation with the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies (IMI) at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

The successful candidate will work on the project entitled “Quantifying the Signature Sound of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concerts” (Signature Sound Vienna), funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and led by Dr. David M. Weigl in collaboration with Prof. Werner Goebl (IWK), and Profs. Markus Grassl and Fritz Trümpi (IMI). This project will generate and empirically test musicological hypotheses pertaining to the renowned New Year’s Concert series. We will attempt to find quantitative traces of the influence of the orchestra, conductor, and other contextual factors on historical performance recordings, by means of score-informed audio feature extraction technologies. The project will involve close interdisciplinary collaboration between historical musicology, performance science, and music informatics, and will also feature a strong emphasis on digital means of disseminating findings to scholarly and lay audiences. The successful candidate is expected to undertake doctoral studies at mdw.

Expected starting date: 1 October 2021 (flexible)

Working hours: Part-time, 30 hours per week (alongside PhD)

Contract length: 3 years

Salary: According to the Austrian collective labour agreement, the monthly gross pay for doctoral candidates is € 2,228,60 (14 times), in case of job-related former experience a gross pay of € 2.642,- (at a maximum) is possible, including health care and social benefits.

Tasks: The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and pursuing the musicological and performance-science aspects of the research project, and for contributing to the digitisation of music resources (e.g., generating music encodings), interacting closely with project staff, and engaging in dissemination actions (publications) and outreach activities.

Employment requirements: Applicants must have completed Masters studies in musicology, performance science, performance studies, or a related field, and have a demonstrable affinity for working with digital music information technologies. Applicants should demonstrate professional competence in English and German.

Desired qualifications: Experience with music encoding technologies (e.g., MEI, MusicXML) and/or working with audio feature data and music information retrieval tools is preferred. Experience conducting computational musicological analyses within a programming environment (e.g., Python, R) is beneficial, as is an awareness of data modelling and/or semantic Web approaches in the music domain.
