Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)
The successful candidate will work on the project entitled “Études for Live-Electronics” (https://iwk.mdw.ac.at/projects/fwf-peek-live-electronics/) funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and led by Alex Hofmann (PI), in collaboration with Prof. Karlheinz Essl (Department for Composition, Electro-acoustics and Sound Engineering). This project aims at developing a new understanding of the concept of études through the practice of live-electronics. With a series of artistic experiments, we will explore new methods of designing electronic instruments, creating repertoire and building a diverse community, in close connection with performance practice. The doctoral researcher will test hypotheses on the transference effects of different audio synthesis environments on live-electronic music performances.
Expected starting date: between 1st September – 1st October 2022
Working hours: Part-time (50%), 20 hours per week
Contract: initially offered for 3 years
Salary: According to the Austrian collective labour agreement, the monthly gross pay is at a minimum of € 1.533,50 (14 times), including health care and social benefits.
The successful candidate will be responsible to design and run artistic experiments within the research project, to interact closely with other project members and external collaborators, and to engage in dissemination actions (publications, concert presentations, workshops) including data management, outreach activities via social media and video documentation. A commitment to a daily (1h, 5-days a week) live-electronics practice during the practicing phases of the project is essential. The successful candidate is also encouraged to pursue a PhD alongside the research project through the mdw PhD programme.
Applicants must have a master’s degree in music performance, music composition/theory or a related field. A documented artistic background and experience with audio synthesis environments (e.g. PureData, Max, SuperCollider, Csound, etc.) are required. Applicants must demonstrate professional competence in English, both written and spoken.
Familiarity with international scholarly discourses in the fields of artistic research, NIME, and/or computer music, as well as programming skills (Python, C++) are also beneficial.
