Wir gratulieren Isabel Frey und Ioannis Christidis zur Verleihung des Berta-und Kurt-Blaukopf-Preises 2026 für herausragende Dissertationen an der mdw. Die Feierliche Verleihung findet am Mittwoch, 17. Juni 2026, 17-19 Uhr im Bankettsaal statt.

Folgende Veranstaltungen erwarten Sie noch im Juni:

Am 16. Juni von 9:00 bis 19:00 Uhr sowie am 17. Juni von 9:00 bis 10:30 Uhr finden die Zulassungsprüfungen für das Masterstudium Ethnomusikologie statt. Ort: Franz-Liszt-Saal der mdw (Lothringerstraße 18, 1030 Wien). Alle Prüfungen sind öffentlich. 

Am 25. Juni um 15:00 Uhr und 16:00 Uhr treten Sonia Hernández und Soojin Jeon zur künstlerischen Abschlussprüfung im Masterstudiengang Ethnomusikologie an. Herzliche Einladung! 

Am 29. Juni um 19:00 Uhr laden wir zum Gastvortrag "Jewish fiddle in the pre-World War II southeastern Belarus and Volyn oblast, Ukraine (based on Sofia Magid’s collection)" von  D. Zisl Slepovitch (New York).

• Am 5. November 2026, 13.30–15.00, wird Dr. Lea Hagmann einen Gastvortrag zu Jodeln in der Schweiz halten. 
• Am 6. November 2026 abends zeigen wir den Film "Beyond Tradition. Kraft der Naturstimmen", von Rahel von Gunten und Lea Hagmann.

Künstlerische Masterprüfungen in Ethnomusikologie

Die künstlerischen Prüfungen von Masterstudierenden der Ethnomusikologie finden am Donnerstag, dem 25. Juni, im Fanny-Hensel-Saal statt.

Sonia Hernández wird um 15:00 Uhr ihre Prüfung über die Gitarre in der peruanischen Criolla-Musik präsentieren. Ihr Programm zeigt die Vielfalt der peruanischen Criolla-Musik und reicht von traditionellen Ensembles bis hin zu Kompositionen und Arrangements für Sologitarre und Gitarrenquartett. Darunter befindet sich eine Komposition von Virginia Yep: „Serenata Peruana”.

Um 16:00 Uhr folgt Soojin Jeon. Sie wird eigene neu komponierte Werke aus der zeitgenössischen westlichen klassischen Musik für die alpenländische Zither uraufführen. Parallel zum Masterstudium in Ethnomusikologie studiert Soojin Jeon im Diplomstudiengang Komposition und Musiktheorie an der mdw.

Gastvortrag

Jüdische Geigenmusik im Südosten von Belarus und im Gebiet Wolhynien (Ukraine) vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg 

Sofia Magids Aufnahmen jüdischer Musiker in Wolhynien und im Südosten von Belarus, die zwischen 1928 und 1938 entstanden, stellen ein einzigartiges Dokument dar, das Stile und Repertoire jüdischer Instrumentalist*innen und Volkssänger*innen verschiedener Altersgruppen – ob Profis, Semiprofis oder Amateur*innen – bewahrt und vermittelt. Nach der Veröffentlichung der von D. Zisl Slepovitch angefertigten Transkriptionen dieser Stücke in zwei Bänden in den Jahren 2024–25 ist diese Präsentation der erste Versuch, diese relativ kleine, aber einzigartig wichtige Sammlung zu systematisieren, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf den regionalen Stilen des Geigenspiels, von kurzen Tanzmelodien bis hin zu Kompositionen in Langform, die nicht selten von den Interpreten selbst verfasst wurden.

We congratulate Isabel Frey and Ioannis Christidis on being awarded the 2026 Berta and Kurt Blaukopf Prize for their outstanding dissertations at the MDW. The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Banquet Hall.

The following events await you in June: 

On June 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on June 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the entrance exams for the Master’s program in Ethnomusicology will take place in the Franz Liszt Hall at the mdw (Lothringerstraße 18, 1030 Vienna). All exams are open to the public. 

On June 25 at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., we invite you to the final artistic exams for the Master’s program in Ethnomusicology by Sonia Hernández and Soojin Jeon. 

On June 29 at 7:00 p.m., we will have a guest lecture titled “Jewish fiddle in pre-World War II southeastern Belarus and Volyn Oblast, Ukraine (based on Sofia Magid’s collection)” by D. Zisl Slepovitch (New York).

We are very happy to the publication of the new special collection of articles “Music, Migration, and Belonging in 21st-Century Europe” in the journal Music & Minorities, guest edited by Anja Brunner, with original contributions by Nadia Kiwan, Ioannis Christidis, Andrew Snyder, Andrea Dankić and Erica Åberg, and Louisa Hutzler, as well as an introductory editorial Anja Brunner. Concert

Master in Ethnomusikology: Artistic Examinations

The artistic examinations for Master's students in Ethnomusicology will take place on Thursday, June 25, in the Fanny Hensel Hall.

At 3:00 p.m., Sonia Hernández will perform her exam, presenting Peruvian Criolla music for guitar. Her program features various styles of Criolla music, ranging from traditional ensemble pieces to compositions and arrangements for solo guitar and guitar quartet. Among them is a composition by Virginia Yep, "Serenata Peruana."

Soojin Jeon will perform at 4:00 p.m., premiering her compositions for the alpine zither in contemporary Western classical music. Jeon is pursuing a Master's degree in Ethnomusicology and a diploma in Composition and Music Theory at the mdw.

Guest lecture

Jewish fiddle in the pre-World War II southeastern Belarus and Volyn oblast, Ukraine (based on Sofia Magid’s collection)

Sofia Magid’s recordings of Jewish musicians in Volyn and southeastern Belarus made between 1928-38, constitute one of a kind document that preserves and conveys styles and repertoire of Jewish instrumentalists and folk singers, of various age groups, professional, semiprofessional, and amateur alike. Following publication of these pieces’ transcriptions done by D. Zisl Slepovitch in two volumes in 2024-25, this presentation is the first attempt to systematize this relatively small but uniquely important collection, with a particular focus on the regional style(s) of fiddle playing, from short dance tunes to long form compositions often authored by the performers.
