Wir begrüßen Sie herzlich im neuen Jahr mit einer weiteren Ausgabe der Ethnomusicology News über Neuigkeiten und bevorstehenden Veranstaltungen aus unserem Institut:

Diesen Freitag, den 16. Jänner 2026 um 18:00 Uhr, findet die Filmveranstaltung "Interrogating Israeli Folk Dance" an der mdw statt: ein Filmscreening von "Everything You Have is Yours" und anschließendes Gespräch auf Zoom mit der israelischen Tänzerin und angehenden Rabbinerin Hadar Ahuvia. 

Wir freuen uns, die Veröffentlichung der Institutsreihe klanglese 12, "Music, Dance and Inequalities", herausgegeben von Marko Kölbl und Hande Sağlam, bekanntzugeben. Der gesammte Sammelband ist online open access zugänglich. 

Weiters laden wir Sie herzlich zum Symposium des Music and Minorities Research Centers "Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies" von 12.-14. Februar 2026 an der mdw ein, bei dem einige Institutsmitarbeiter*innen beteiligt sein werden. 

Soeben wurde der Call for Papers für das 10. Symposium der Study Group on Music and Dance in Southeastern Europe des International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (ICTMD) veröffentlicht, welches von 23.-29. September 2026 an der mdw stattfinden wird, Wir freuen uns über spannende Einreichungen!

Interrogating Israeli Folk Dance: Filmscreening Everything You Have Is Yours

im Anschluss Zoom-Gespräch mit Hadar Ahuvia

In „Everything You Have Is Yours“ hinterfragt die in New York lebende Choreografin Hadar Ahuvia die Wurzeln der israelischen Volkstänze, die sie als Kind zusammen mit ihrer Mutter in den USA gelernt hat. Konfrontiert mit romantisierten Geschichten über ihre Großeltern, die in den 1930er Jahren nach Palästina kamen, begibt sich Ahuvia auf eine persönliche Reise, um sich mit den Gründungsmythen und Grenzen des Zionismus auseinanderzusetzen. Durch ihre Arbeit entsteht ein Gewebe künstlerischer Porträts – jüdische, israelische und palästinensische Tänzer*innen, die in New York City leben, setzen sich mit den Fragen auseinander, was wir übernehmen und was wir verkörpern, um es weiterzugeben. Nach der Vorführung findet ein Gespräch mit Hadar Ahuvia über Zoom statt.

Wir weisen auf Band 12 der Institutsreihe klanglese mit dem Titel „Music, Dance, and Inequalities“, herausgegeben von Marko Kölbl und Hande Sağlam, hin. Die Online-Publikation enthält Beiträge aus der ethnomusikologischen Minderheiten- und Geschlechterforschung und basiert auf dem vom Institut veranstalteten Joint Meeting of the Study Groups on Music and Gender und Music and Minorities des International Council of Traditional Music in 2018. Der gesamte Band ist open access verfügbar.

Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies

12.-14. Februar 2026, Fanny Hensel-Saal, mdw

Das internationale Symposium Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies bildet den Abschluss des gleichnamigen Projekts und soll die zukünftige Ausrichtung des Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC) ab 2026 gestalten. Vom 12. bis 14. Februar bringt diese mehrtägige Veranstaltung internationale und lokale Forschende, Musiker*innen, Aktivist*innen, Community-Mitglieder sowie eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit zusammen, um in Präsentationen, Diskussionen und Austauschformaten miteinander in Dialog zu treten.

Das Symposium dient der Reflexion und Weiterentwicklung des zukünftigen Auftrags des MMRC und untersucht neue Synergien und Perspektiven, die in den zentralen Prinzipien des Zentrums verankert sind: engagierte Forschung, dialogische Wissensproduktion und eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Machtungleichgewichten. Diese Vision wird in unterschiedlichen Formaten umgesetzt, darunter wissenschaftliche Beiträge, Diskussionspanels, aktivistische Roundtables, künstlerische Performances und eine abschließende Festveranstaltung.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the institute series klanglese 12, "Music, Dance and Inequalities", edited by Marko Kölbl and Hande Sağlam. The entire anthology is available online in open access. 

We would also like to cordially invite you to the symposium of the Music and Minorities Research Center, "Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies," on February 12-14, 2026, at the mdw, in which several department members will participate.

Interrogating Israeli Folk Dance: Filmscreening Everything You Have Is Yours

Followed by a Zoom conversation with Hadar Ahuvia

In Everything You Have Is Yours, NYC-based choreographer Hadar Ahuvia interrogates the roots of the Israeli folk dances she grew up dancing with her mother in the U.S. Confronting romanticized stories about her grandparents, settlers in 1930s Palestine, Ahuvia embarks on a personal journey to reckon with the founding mythologies and transgressions of Zionism. Through her work, a web of artistic portraits emerges— Jewish, Israeli, and Palestinian dancers living in New York City grapple with the questions of what we inherit and what we embody to carry forward. Following the screening, there will be a conversation with Hadar Ahuvia via Zoom.

klanglese 12: Music, Dance and Inequalities

We would like to draw your attention to volume 12 of the department’s book series klanglese, titled „Music, Dance, and Inequalities,“ edited by Marko Kölbl and Hande Sağlam. This online publication features contributions from ethnomusicological minority and gender studies and is based on the Joint Meeting of the Study Groups on Music and Gender as well as Music and Minorities of the Internatioal Council for Traditional Music, hosted by the department in 2018. The entire volume is available open access.

Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies

February 12–14, 2026, Fanny Hensel Hall, mdw

The international symposium Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies will conclude the project of the same name, aiming to shape the future vision of the Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC) from 2026 onward. Taking place from February 12–14 this multi-day event will bring together international and local researchers, musicians, activists, community members and the wider public for vibrant presentations, discussions, and exchange.

The symposium will evaluate the MMRC’s future mission and explore new synergies and directions rooted in its core principles of engaged research, dialogic knowledge production and critical engagement with power imbalances. This vision will be realised through various formats, including academic papers, discussion panels, activist roundtables, artistic performances and a celebratory closing event.
