ein ereignisreiches Jahr 2025 neigt sich dem Ende zu – hier sind die aktuellsten Entwicklungen aus dem Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC)!
Rückblick: am 18.11. fand die diesjährige MMRC Lecture mit spannenden Beiträgen von Martin Stokes und Isabel Frey statt und musikalischer Untermalung von Marwan Abado. Die Veranstaltung ist nun auch in der mdw Mediathek abrufbar.

Updates vom M&M Journal: Neue Richtlinien zu den Themen „Urheberschaft, Mitwirkung und künstliche Intelligenz“ und Ankündigung des neuen Journal-Bereichs „Forum“.

The 2025 MMRC Lecture
Minority Voices in Civil Society: Exclusion – Inclusion – Solidarity in Music
An dieser Stelle möchten wir auf die erfolgreiche „2025 MMRC Lecture“ zurückblicken und erste Eindrücke teilen. Unter dem Titel „Minority Voices in Civil Society: Exclusion – Inclusion – Solidarity in Music” fand unsere diesjährige Lecture am 18.11. erstmals im Konzertsaal des Future Art Labs statt.
Unsere Gäste, Martin Stokes und Isabel Frey, näherten sich von unterschiedlichen Ausgangspunkten und anhand konkreter Beispiele der Frage, wie sich gesellschaftliche In- bzw. Exklusion innerhalb marginalisierter Communities artikuliert und welche Rolle Musik dabei spielt. Beide resümierten mit dem Appell, dass minoritäre Allianzen ein wesentlicher Bestandteil zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements sind und dabei helfen können, unterdrückende und autoritäre politische Tendenzen zu überwinden.
Diese Erkenntnisse wurden durch die musikalischen Beiträge des Musikers Marwan Abado atmosphärisch untermauert. Die Veranstaltung zeigte die Wirkungsmacht von Musik und Forschung auf, und unterstrich die Wichtigkeit von politisch situierter Musikwissenschaft.
Die gesamte Lecture ist nun dauerhaft in der mdw-Mediathek verfügbar und lädt dazu ein, sich mit den erwähnten Themen zu beschäftigen. >> Video-Link

Chae-Lin Kim "Music for the Eye? An Ethnographic Study of Sign Choirs"
FWF ESPRIT Projekt
Durch die Förderzusage des FWF kann das MMRC gemeinsam mit Chae-Lin Kim ein weiteres Projekt am Research Centre willkommen heißen. Das Forschungsprojekt "Music for the Eye? An Ethnographic Study of Sign Choirs" reiht sich somit in die erfolgreiche Geschichte des MMRC ein und wird mit Sicherheit dazu beitragen, neue Erkenntnisse rund um das Thema Gehörlosenchöre zu erarbeiten und zugänglich zu machen.

In dem Projekt untersucht Chae-Lin, wie gehörlose Menschen gemeinsam singen bzw. wie sich deren Stimmen artikulieren. Das Projekt ist die erste umfassende wissenschaftliche Untersuchung von Gebärdenchören im deutschsprachigen Raum, die überwiegend oder ausschließlich aus gehörlosen Menschen bestehen und Lieder in Gebärdensprache performen.
Das Forschungsfeld ist auch für das MMRC ein neues Themengebiet und erweitert somit die vorhandene Expertise am MMRC nachhaltig. Wir danken Chae-Lin für ihr Engagement und gratulieren ihr herzlich zu diesem Erfolg!

Music and Minorities (M&M) Journal
Neuigkeiten von unserem M&M Journal
Das M&M hat kürzlich seine Richtlinien aktualisiert. Neben geringfügigen Überarbeitungen und Klarstellungen gibt es auch zwei wesentliche Änderungen.
In seinem Leitartikel erläutert Malik Sharif, Managing Editor von M&M, die wichtigsten Aspekte dieser Richtlinien sowie die dahinterstehenden Überlegungen. Zum einen betreffen die neuen Bestimmungen "Urheberschaft, Mitwirkung und künstliche Intelligenz", zum anderen wird die neue inhaltliche Kategorie "Forum" eingeführt. Dieser Abschnitt bietet Raum für Beiträge, die nicht in die etablierten Kategorien begutachteter Artikel oder Rezensionen fallen, für den Forschungsbereich des Journals jedoch von bleibendem Wert sind. Mögliche Beiträge sind unter anderem Interviews mit relevanten Künstler*innen, prägnante Stellungnahmen oder Meinungsbeiträge zu aktuellen Debatten in den Musik- und Minderheitenstudien, „Call-and-Response”-Formate oder experimentellere Arten des Schreibens zu Themen aus dem Bereich von M&M.
Der erste Beitrag zu dieser Rubrik ist für das Frühjahr 2026 geplant. M&M lädt interessierte Autor*innen ein, Beiträge für diese Rubrik vorzuschlagen (mm-journal@mdw.ac.at).

Jahresversammlung des Österreichischen Nationalkomitees des ICTMD
Symposium: „Artistic Research: Performing Ethnomusicology
Die diesjährige Jahrestagung des nationalen Komitees des ICTMD Österreich wird vom Institut für Ethnomusikologie an der Kunstuniversität Graz, vom 13. – 14. Dezember, ausgerichtet.
Unter den internationalen Vortragenden sind auch einige Forscher*innen vertreten, die am MMRC beschäftigt sind. Unter dem Thema „Artistic Research: Performing Ethnomusicology“ wurde eine Vielzahl an Wissenschaftler*innen eingeladen ihre aktuellen Forschungsfragen und Projekte zu präsentieren. Die Veranstaltung dient der Vernetzung der österreichischen Forschungs-Community und darüber hinaus und trägt zur Sichtbarmachung des Feldes bei.

With an eventful 2025 drawing to a close, here are the latest developments from the Music and Minorities Research Centre (MMRC)!
Event review: This year's MMRC Lecture, which took place on 18 November, featured thought provoking contributions from Martin Stokes and Isabel Frey, with musical accompaniment by Marwan Abado. The event is now available to watch in the mdw media library.
New FWF ESPRIT project approved: Starting in 2026, Chae-Lin Kim will lead the research project “Music for the Eye? An Ethnographic Study of Sign Choirs” at the MMRC.
Updates from the M&M Journal: New Policy on “Authorship, Contributorship, and Artificial Intelligence” and new section “Forum”.

The 2025 MMRC Lecture
Minority Voices in Civil Society: Exclusion – Inclusion – Solidarity in Music
At this point, we would like to share our first impressions of the successful “2025 MMRC Lecture”. Entitled “Minority Voices in Civil Society: Exclusion – Inclusion – Solidarity in Music” the event took place on November 18th for the first time in the concert hall of the Future Art Lab.
The question of how social inclusion and exclusion are articulated within marginalised communities was explored by the speakers Martin Stokes and Isabel Frey, from different starting points and using concrete examples, with a focus on the role music plays in this. They both concluded by emphasizing that minority alliances are an integral component of civil society engagement and can contribute to the overcoming of oppressive and authoritarian political tendencies.
These insights were underscored by the atmospheric musical contributions of Marwan Abado. The event demonstrated the power of music and research, and emphasised the importance of politically engaged musicology.

Chae-Lin Kim "Music for the Eye? An Ethnographic Study of Sign Choirs"
FWF ESPRIT Project
Thanks to the FWF's funding confirmation, the MMRC is pleased to welcome another project to the Research Center, in collaboration with Chae-Lin Kim. The research project, “Music for the Eye? An Ethnographic Study of Sign Choirs”, which will contribute to the MMRC's research portfolio by developing and disseminating new insights into the topic of deaf choirs.

Chae-Lin will investigate how deaf people sing together and how they articulate their voices. This project is the first comprehensive scientific study of sign choirs in German-speaking countries consisting predominantly or exclusively of deaf people who perform songs in sign language.
This is a new subject area for the MMRC, which will expand its existing expertise in this field in the long term. We would like to thank Chae-Lin for her commitment and congratulate her on this success!

News from our M&M Journal
The M&M has recently updated its guidelines. In addition to minor revisions and clarifications, two important changes have been made.
In his editorial, Malik Sharif, the M&M's managing editor, explains the most important aspects of the new guidelines and the ideas behind them. The new provisions concern “Authorship, Contributorship, and Artificial Intelligence”, while a new content category, “Forum”, has also been introduced. This section provides a space for contributions that do not fall into the established categories of peer-reviewed articles or reviews, but are of lasting value to the field of study covered by the journal’s scope. Contributions may include, but are not limited to, interviews with relevant artists, concise position statements or opinion pieces on current debates in music and minority studies, “call & response” formats, or more experimental kinds of writing on issues within M&M’s scope.
The first contribution to this section is planned for spring 2026. M&M invites interested authors to submit proposals for contributions to this section (mm-journal@mdw.ac.at).

Annual Meeting of the Austrian National Committee of the ICTMD
Symposium: "Artistic Research: Performing Ethnomusicology"
The Institute of Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz will host this year's annual conference of the national committee of ICTMD Austria from 13 to 14 December.
Several researchers employed at the MMRC will be among the international speakers. The event aims to connect the Austrian research community and beyond, raising the profile of the field in the process.
