mdwPress blickt auf ereignisreiche Monate zurück und wir freuen uns, Ihnen einen Überblick über Neuerscheinungen, Calls und Ankündigungen geben zu können.
Personelle Änderungen in der Koordination
Zunächst haben wir personelle Änderungen zu vermelden: Wir freuen uns sehr, dass Jana Diewald seit Juni das Koordinationsteam unterstützt – herzlich willkommen an der mdw! Des Weiteren wird Max Bergmann mdwPress mit Ende Juli leider verlassen; wir wünschen ihm alles Gute für die Zukunft! An seiner Stelle wird ab August Christian Keitel im Koordinationsteam von mdwPress mitarbeiten und als Ansprechpartner für alle Open-Access-Agenden der mdw zur Verfügung stehen.
Artistic Research neu bei mdwPress
Auch inhaltlich wird sich mdwPress künftig breiter aufstellen. Um den rasanten Entwicklungen im Bereich Artistic Research gerecht zu werden, möchten wir den Verlag in Zukunft stärker für Publikationen aus diesem Bereich öffnen und die Publikationstätigkeit der künstlerisch Forschenden an der mdw gezielt fördern. Wir danken Ruth Anderwald (Gastprofessorin am ARC), die dafür ab Herbst 2025 das wissenschaftliche Kuratorium als Expertin für Artistic Research verstärken wird.

Xenakis – Back to the Roots: Philological Approaches to Electroacoustic Music
Reinhold Friedl, Thomas Grill, Nikolaus Urbanek, Michelle Ziegler (Hg.)
Der Sammelband bringt Beiträge von Wegbegleitern des griechisch-französischen Komponisten Iannis Xenakis und renommierten Expert_innen der Xenakis-Forschung mit Studien zur Philologie elektroakustischer Musik zusammen. Er schließt mit einer Diskussion zur Aufführung dieser elektroakustischen Werke und verbindet so die philologische Fragestellungen wieder mit der musikalischen Praxis.
Das Buch ist auf Englisch erschienen.

Musik und Suizidalität. Interdisziplinäre Perspektiven
Julia Heimerdinger, Hannah Riedl, Thomas Stegemann (Hg.)
Suizidalität ist ein verbreitetes Sujet unzähliger Lieder, Opernarien und Instrumentalstücke – so etwa im berühmt-berüchtigten Suicide Song »Gloomy Sunday«. Aktuell wird in fachlichen und populärwissenschaftlichen Debatten diskutiert, inwieweit Musik Einfluss auf reale Suizidhandlungen zeitigt, sei es als Risiko- oder als protektiver Faktor. Der Band greift diese Debatten auf und bringt erstmals kulturhistorische, empirische, medizinische und therapeutische Perspektiven zusammen.

International Journal of Music Mediation
Im Jänner 2025 launchte das International Journal of Music Mediation mit der Veröffentlichung der ersten Ausgabe Doing Music Mediation. International Perspectives on a Multi-Faceted Practice. Wir gratulieren herzlich!
Derzeit laufen bereits die Calls for Contributions für die beiden kommenden Ausgaben, Transformation. Music Mediation as a Game Changer (bis 31. Dezember 2025) sowie Participatory Opera and Music Theatre (bis 31. Mai 2026).

Turning Social: The Social-Transformative Potential of Music Mediation

Der Sammelband bringt Perspektiven aus Forschung und Praxis zusammen und untersucht, wie Musikvermittlung als eigenständige künstlerisch-pädagogische Praxis den sozialen Zusammenhalt fördern, Dialog ermöglichen und neue Formen des Engagements schaffen kann. Die Beiträge reflektieren kritisch die Bedingungen, Grenzen und Potenziale von Musikvermittlung in verschiedenen Kontexten und liefern Erkenntnisse für Wissenschaftler, Musiker und Praktiker, die an der Schnittstelle von Musik und Gesellschaft arbeiten.
Das Buch erscheint auf Englisch im Sommer 2025.

Music and Motion: Interweaving Artistic Practice and Theory in Dance and Beyond
Stephanie Schroedter (Hg.)
Der Sammelband widmet sich einem breiten Spektrum von Performances aus verschiedenen Genres und Stilrichtungen, darunter auch solche, die über die Bühne hinausgehen. Ziel ist es, die Beziehungen zwischen Musik, ihrer Körperlichkeit und bewegten Körpern in der künstlerischen Praxis zu diskutieren. Damit reagiert er auf eine theoretische Herausforderung: Musik als unsichtbare, aber hörbare Bewegung aus der Perspektive der Wahrnehmung und auf der Grundlage sichtbarer Bewegungen zu konzeptualisieren, die inszeniert, choreografiert oder improvisiert werden können.
Das Buch erscheint auf Englisch im Sommer 2025.

mdwPress looks back on an eventful few months and we are pleased to provide you with an overview of new publications, calls, and announcements.
Personnel changes in the coordination team
First, we have some personnel changes to announce: We are very pleased that Jana Diewald joined the coordination team in June—welcome to mdw! Furthermore, Max Bergmann will unfortunately be leaving mdwPress at the end of July; we wish him all the best for the future! Christian Keitel will be joining the mdwPress coordination team in August and will be available as a contact person for all open access matters at mdw.
Artistic Research new at mdwPress
mdwPress will also be broadening its content in the future. In order to keep pace with the rapid developments in the field of artistic research, we would like to open up the publishing house more to publications in this area and specifically support the publishing activities of artistic researchers at the mdw. We would like to thank Ruth Anderwald (visiting professor at the ARC), who will be joining the academic advisory board as an expert in artistic research in fall 2025.

Xenakis – Back to the Roots: Philological Approaches to Electroacoustic Music

This anthology brings together contributions from companions of the Greek-French composer Iannis Xenakis and renowned experts in Xenakis research, with studies on the philology of electroacoustic music. It concludes with a discussion on the performance of these electroacoustic works, thus reconnecting philological questions with musical practice.

Musik und Suizidalität. Interdisziplinäre Perspektiven

Suicidal tendencies are a common theme in countless songs, opera arias, and instrumental pieces—such as in the infamous suicide song “Gloomy Sunday.” Currently, there is debate among experts and popular science writers about the extent to which music influences actual suicidal behavior, whether as a risk factor or a protective factor. This volume takes up these debates and, for the first time, brings together cultural-historical, empirical, medical, and therapeutic perspectives.
The book is published in German.

Music and Motion: Interweaving Artistic Practice and Theory in Dance and Beyond

This volume maps a wide range of performances from different genres and styles, including those that transcend the stage. The aim is to discuss relationships between music, its physicality, and moving bodies in artistic practice. In doing so, they respond to a theoretical challenge: to conceptualize music as an invisible but audible motion from the perspective of perception and on the basis of visible movements that can be staged, choreographed, or improvised.
