Im aktuellen Newsletter des Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC) gibt es einige Neuigkeiten!
Der Call for Papers für unser Symposium 2026 mit dem Titel „Between Research and Activism“ wurde veröffentlicht und lädt die Forschungscommunity dazu ein, Beiträge einzureichen.
Als Nächstes verkünden wir voller Freude, dass der Antrag von Jelena Gligorijević: "Made in YUGOSLAVIennA: Balkan Music and Multiple Marginality" als FWF Principal-Investigator-Projekt gefördert wird.
Ein weiterer Erfolg ist die Auswahl von Ioannis Christidis als Post-DocTrack -Stipendiat durch die Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW).
Abschließend möchten wir auf den kürzlich erschienenen Artikel unserer Kollegin Kai Tang in der aktuellen Ausgabe der Musicologica Austriaca hinweisen.

Call for Papers
Between Research and Activism
Das Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC) lädt Forscher*innen dazu ein, Einreichungen für das internationale Symposium "Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies" einzureichen.
Einreichfrist: 15.07.2025
Das Symposium findet vom 12. bis 14. Februar 2026 in Wien statt und läutet eine neue Phase des MMRC ein. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung sollen die jüngsten Entwicklungen und zukünftigen Richtungen im Bereich der Musik- und Minderheitenstudien beleuchten. Insbesondere die Schnittpunkte von Wissenschaft, Aktivismus, Politik, künstlerischer Praxis und sozialem Engagement sollen untersucht werden, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf kritischen und dialogischen Ansätzen liegt. Es sind Beiträge aus verschiedenen Bereichen eingeladen, darunter Ethnomusikologie, Migration Studies, Post und Decolonial Studies, Gender- und Queer Studies sowie Disability Studies.

Jelena Gligorijević: "Made in YUGOSLAVIennA: Balkan Music and Multiple Marginality"
Einzelprojekt, gefördert vom Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF
Der FWF hat in seiner jüngsten Auswahlrunde das Projekt „Made in YUGOSLAVIennA“ von Jelena Gligorijević zur Förderung ausgewählt. Das neue Projekt wird im Frühjahr 2026 am MMRC starten.
Unter dem Aspekt der „multiplen Marginalität“ wird das Projekt untersuchen, wie Balkan-Popularmusik die Identität und die Lebensgeschichten von Mitgliedern der ex-jugoslawischen Diaspora prägt, die auch in Bezug auf Geschlecht und Sexualität marginalisiert sind. Um dies zu erreichen, wird sich das Projekt auf eine Reihe von Fallstudien in Wien konzentrieren, die ex-jugoslawische Künstler*innen, Organisator*innen und Partygänger*innen aus verschiedenen Balkan-Popularmusikszenen umfassen.
Das Projekt wird die verschiedenen Formen und Nutzungsweisen von Balkan-Populärmusik bei diesen Personen und Gruppen analysieren. Insbesondere wird es die Rolle von Musik bei der Vermittlung und Verarbeitung von Erfahrungen multipler Marginalität und bei der Verhandlung von Identitäten und Machtdynamiken sowie die Beziehung von Musik zu breiteren politischen Diskursen untersuchen.

Ioannis Christidis erhält ÖAW-Stipendium
Post-DocTrack Programm der ÖAW
Die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften hat Ioannis Christidis eines seiner kompetitiv vergebenen Post-DocTrack-Stipendien verliehen. Diese Stipendien unterstützen Absolvent*innen eines Doktorats- oder PhD-Studiums in den Geistes-, Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften, die eine wissenschaftliche Karriere anstreben, in der Übergangsphase unmittelbar nach der Promotion.
Ioannis wird das Stipendium nutzen, um einen Antrag für ein FWF-ESPRIT-Projekt zu entwickeln. Das geplante Forschungsprojekt „EDM and the Affective Politics of Arab Marginalized Communities on European Dancefloors“ soll die kürzlich entstandene arabische Electronic-Dance-Music-Szene (EDM) in Europa erforschen.

Artikel: „Banned Subversive or State-Promoted “Pathbreaker”? Re-Interpreting the Rise of Chinese Rock” von Kai Tang
Musicologica Austriaca – Journal for Austrian Music Studies (MusAu)
Kai Tangs kürzlich erschienener Artikel befasst sich mit Musik als Ausdruck von sozialem Aktivismus. Dabei liegt ein Fokus auf der Entwicklung des chinesischen Rocks, der in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur als erfolgreiche Rebellion und als Zeichen des demokratischen Charakters der chinesischen Popmusik interpretiert wird. Im Text wird die staatliche Unterstützung für Cui Jian untersucht, der international als Begründer des chinesischen Rocks gilt.
Zudem wird die in der Literatur zum Thema chinesische Popmusik vorherrschende Sichtweise infrage gestellt, nach der Cui Jian und seine Rocksongs in den 1980er-Jahren oppositionell und illegal waren. Tang ergründet, wie eine staatlich angestoßene Musikreform eine populäre Bewegung hervorbrachte und den Ausgangspunkt einer erfolgreichen Rebellion markierte.
Musicologica Austriaca – Zeitschrift für Österreichische Musikwissenschaft (MusAu) ist die offizielle Fachzeitschrift der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Musikwissenschaft (ÖGMW). Letztere ist die größte Vereinigung von Musikwissenschaftler*innen und entsprechenden Institutionen in Österreich.

We have published the Call for Papers for our 2026 symposium entitled 'Between Research and Activism' and invite the research community to submit papers.
We are pleased to announce that Jelena Gligorijević's proposal, entitled 'Made in YUGOSLAVIennA: Balkan Music and Multiple Marginality', has been selected as an FWF Principal Investigator project.
The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) has selected Ioannis Christidis as a Post-DocTrack fellow, marking yet another success.
Finally, we would like to draw your attention to the recently published article by our colleague Kai Tang, which can be found in the current issue of Musicologica Austriaca.

Call for Papers
Between Research and Activism
The Music and Minorities Research Centre (MMRC) invites researchers to submit proposals for the international symposium, 'Between Research and Activism: The Futures of Music and Minority Studies'.
The submission deadline is 15 July 2025.
Taking place from 12 to 14 February 2026 in Vienna, the symposium marks a new phase for the MMRC. It will highlight recent developments and future directions in music and minority studies. The symposium will explore the intersections of scholarship, activism, politics, artistic practice, and social engagement, focusing on critical and dialogue-based approaches. Contributions from various fields are invited, including ethnomusicology, migration studies, postcolonial and decolonial studies, gender and queer studies, and disability studies.

Jelena Gligorijević: "Made in YUGOSLAVIennA: Balkan Music and Multiple Marginality"
Principal-Investigator-Project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)
The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) selected Jelena Gligorijević’s project "Made in YUGOSLAVIennA” for funding in its latest selection round. The new project will begin at the MMRC in spring 2026.
Employing the lens of “multiple marginality”, the project will examine how Balkan popular music shapes the identity and life narratives of ex-Yugoslav diaspora members who are also marginalized along gender and sexuality lines. To achieve this, the project will focus on a series of case studies in Vienna, encompassing ex-Yugoslav female and queer artists, organisers, and partygoers from different Balkan popular music scenes.
The project will analyse the various forms and applications of Balkan popular music among these individuals and groups. In particular, it will explore the role of music in mediating experiences of multiple marginality and in negotiating identities and power dynamics, as well as its relation to broader political discourses.

Ioannis Christidis awarded with ÖAW fellowship
Post-DocTrack programme by ÖAW (Austrian Academy of Sciences)
The Austrian Academy of Sciences has awarded Ioannis Christidis one of its competitive Post-DocTrack fellowships. These fellowships support recent doctoral graduates in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies who are aiming for an academic career. The fellowships are designed to support them in the transition phase immediately following their doctorate.
Ioannis will use the grant to develop a proposal for an FWF ESPRIT project. The planned research project “EDM and the Affective Politics of Arab Marginalized Communities on European Dancefloors” will explore the recently emerged Arab electronic dance music (EDM) scene in Europe.

Article: “Banned, Subversive or State-Promoted ‘Pathbreaker’?” Re-Interpreting the Rise of Chinese Rock" by Kai Tang
Musicologica Austriaca – Journal for Austrian Music Studies (MusAu)
The recently published article by Kai Tang explores music as a form of social activism. Focusing on the development of Chinese rock, the article argues that this genre constitutes a successful rebellion and, according to academic literature, is a sign of the democratic nature of Chinese popular music. The article emphasises the pivotal role of the state in promoting Cui Jian, widely recognised as the father of Chinese rock. Contrary to existing literature on Chinese popular music, this publication challenges the notion that Cui Jian and his rock songs were subversive and banned in the 1980s.
Furthermore, it examines how a state-led musical reformation transformed into a popular trend and the consequences of this triumphant uprising.
Musicologica Austriaca – Journal for Austrian Music Studies (MusAu) is the official peer-reviewed journal of the Austrian Musicological Society (ÖGMW), the largest association of music scholars and corresponding institutions in Austria.
