Liebe Leser*innen!

gerne möchten wir Sie über die kommenden Veranstaltungen unseres Instituts informieren:

Für Kurzentschlossene empfehlen wir heute zwei Veranstaltungen: um 17:00 findet die Buchpräsentation des Sammelbands "Üben und Ver_üben: Diversität als diskriminierungskritische Praxis in Kunst, Kultur und Bildung" statt, wo auch Marko Kölbl sprechen wird. 

Darüber hinaus findet heute Abend um 18:00 ein Klassenabend mit Studierenden von Javier Silvestrini (IVE), Ignacio Giovannetti (iPop) und den Gästen Eva und Arnoldo Moreno, die lateinamerikanische und karibische Musik aus Argentinien, Peru, Puerto Rico und Venezuela für Gitarre, Gitarre und Gesang sowie verschiedene Ensembles präsentieren. 

Morgen, am 6. Juni, findet die Veranstaltung "Bandura & Barock" mit Bogdan Shutka statt – ein vielseitiger Abend zu Musiktraditionen der Ukraine mit Filmvorführung, Vortrag und Konzert.

Am 10. Juni hält die palästinensisch-jordanische Oud-Spielerin und Sängerin Nemat Battah von der Sibelius-Akademie einen Gastvortrag und Workshop zur "Arabische Musik des östlichen Mittelmeerraums."

Am 20. und 21. Juni findet die zweitägige Veranstaltung "queer trans* culturality"  statt, bei der sich Aktivist*innen, Künstler*innen und Forscher*innen über queere Sichtweisen auf Transkulturalität austauschen. Als Abschluss gibt es am 21. Juni ein Konzert und Artist Talk mit dem serbischen Sänger DŽIPSII.

Ein vielseitiger Abend zu Musiktraditionen der Ukraine: von der Geschichte der Bandura mit ihrem teils vom europäischen Barock geprägten Stil und Repertoire, über die bewegende Geschichte der Bandura-Kapelle im 20. Jahrhundert bis hin zur Musik der Karpatenukraine.

Arabische Musik des östlichen Mittelmeerraums: Ein Überblick über das Maqam-System im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert

Vortrag und Workshop mit Nemat Battah (Sibelius-Akademie, Finnland)

Dienstag, 10. Juni 2025, 16:00-19:00, Seminarraum AW U2013

In diesem Vortrag wird Nemat Battah einen Überblick über das Maqam-System geben, wie es im östlichen Mittelmeerrepertoire des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts verwendet wurde. Die Teilnehmer*innen werden in die Struktur und Funktion des Maqam in dieser Musiktradition eingeführt, wobei ein spezifischer Maqam im Detail untersucht wird. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die Mikrotonalität gelegt – ein wesentliches Merkmal des Systems. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag bietet ein Workshop praktische Erfahrungen: Die Teilnehmer*innen lernen ein klassisches arabisches Lied und ein Volkslied aus der gleichen Region, die beide auf dem vorgestellten Maqam basieren.

Nemat Battah ist eine palästinensisch-jordanische Sängerin, Oud-Spielerin, Komponistin und Pädagogin. Sie lebt derzeit in Helsinki, Finnland, wo sie als Dozentin und stellvertretende Leiterin der Abteilung für globale Musik der Sibelius-Akademie tätig ist. Nemat ist in traditioneller arabischer Musik ausgebildet. In ihrer eigenen Musik erforscht und verarbeitet sie ihre Erfahrungen mit dem generationenübergreifenden Kriegstrauma als Person palästinensischer Herkunft, deren Familie 1948 aus Palästina nach Jordanien ins Exil gezwungen wurde. Sie arbeitet auch mit international renommierten Künstler*innen in Finnland und im Ausland zusammen.

20. & 21. Juni 2025, Bankettsaal

Diese Veranstaltung bringt Aktivist*innen, Künstler*innen und Forscher*innen unterschiedlicher Hintergründe zusammen, um queere Sichtweisen und Kritiken zu Transkulturalität zu entwickeln – ein Konzept, das essentialistische Grenzen des Vertrauten und des Fremden hinterfragt und den Begriff der "Kultur" problematisiert. Aufbauend auf der Queer of Color-Kritik, die die weißen Flecken in den Diskursen über Ethnizität im Rahmen von Queer Theory aufdeckt, erweitern wir diese analytische Perspektive auf weitere Kontexte, wie ethnische Minderheiten, postmigrantische Gemeinschaften sowie Flucht- und Migrationserfahrungen, insbesondere durch verkörperte Ausdrucksformen in Musik, Tanz oder Theater. DŽIPSII 

Im Rahmen von queer trans* culturality

Samstag, 21. Juni, 19:30, Joseph Haydn-Saal, (19:30 artist talk, 20:15 Konzert)

Jovan Živadinović, bekannt als Džipsii, ist ein serbischer Pop- und R&B-Künstler, Singer-Songwriter und Performer. Schon in jungen Jahren zeigte er eine Leidenschaft für Musik und Performance und begann seinen künstlerischen Werdegang mit Tanz, womit er mehrere nationale Preise gewann. Im Jahr 2023 erlangte Džipsii nationale Bekanntheit als Finalist bei der serbischen Eurovisionsauswahl mit dem Lied Greh. Er ist bekannt dafür, dass er Underground-Sounds mit Pop- und R&B-Einflüssen mischt. Seine Arbeit ist von emotionaler Tiefe und einer einzigartigen künstlerischen Identität geprägt. Als queerer Rom ist er auch einer der wenigen Künstler in Serbien, der offen über seine Identität spricht und seine Plattform nutzt, um sich für Inklusion und Repräsentation in der Kunst einzusetzen.

We would like to inform you about upcoming events at our department:

For spontaneous attendees, there are two events today: At 5pm, there will be a book presentation of the anthology "Üben und Ver_üben: Diversität als diskriminierungskritische Praxis in Kunst, Kultur und Bildung", where Marko Kölbl will also speak.

Additionally, at 6pm, there will be a class recital with students of Javier Silvestrini (IVE), Ignacio Giovannetti (iPop), and guests Eva and Arnoldo Moreno, who will present Latin American and Caribbean music from Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela for guitar, guitar, and vocals, as well as various ensembles.

Tomorrow, June 6, the event "Bandura & Baroque" with Bogdan Shutka will take place - a multifaceted evening on musical traditions of Ukraine with a film screening, lecture and concert.

On June 10, the Palestinian-Jordanian oud player and singer Nemat Battah from the Sibelius Academy will give a guest lecture and workshop on "Arabic Music of the Eastern Mediterranean."

On June 20 and 21, the two-day event "queer trans* culturality" will take place, at which activists, artists and researchers will discuss queer perspectives on transculturality. The event will conclude on June 21 with a concert and artist talk with the Serbian singer DŽIPSII.

A multifaceted evening on the musical traditions of Ukraine: from the history of the bandura with its style and repertoire, partly influenced by the European Baroque, to the moving history of the bandura band in the 20th century and the music of Carpathian Ukraine.

Arabic Music of the Eastern Mediterranean: An Overview of the Maqam System in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Tuesday, June 10, 2025, 4 – 7pm, Seminar room AW U2013

In this lecture, Nemat Battah will present an overview of the Maqam system as used in the eastern Mediterranean repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries. Participants will be introduced to the structure and function of the maqam in this musical tradition, with a detailed exploration of one specific maqam. Special attention will be given to microtonality, a vital feature of the system. Following the lecture, a workshop will offer hands-on experience: participants will learn one classical Arabic song and one folk song from the same area, both based on the featured maqam.

Nemat Battah is a Palestinian-Jordanian singer, oud player, composer and educator. She is currently based in Helsinki, Finland, where she is a lecturer and Vice Head of Sibelius Academy’s Global Music Department. Nemat is trained in traditional Arabic music. In her own music she explores and navigates her experiences of transgenerational war trauma as a person of Palestinian heritage whose family was forced into exile from Palestine to Jordan in 1948. She also collaborates with internationally renowned artists in Finland and abroad.

This gathering convenes activists, artists, and researchers from diverse backgrounds to develop queer stances and critiques on transculturality—a concept that interrogates essentialist boundaries of the familiar and the foreign and problematizes the notion of ‘culture’ itself. Building on Queer of Color Critique, which exposes the blank spots in discourses around race within queer theoretical frameworks, we extend this analytical lens to broader contexts involving ethnic minorities, postmigrant communities, and forced migration experiences, particularly through embodied expressions in music, dance or theatre. Jovan Živadinović, known as Džipsii, is a Serbian pop and R&B artist, singer-songwriter, and performer. He showed a passion for music and performance from a young age, beginning his artistic journey through dance, where he won several national awards. In 2023, Džipsii gained national attention as a finalist at Serbia’s Eurovision selection with the song Greh. Known for blending underground sounds with pop and R&B influences, his work is marked by emotional depth and a distinctive artistic identity. As a queer Rom, he is also one of the few artists in Serbia speaking openly about his identity, using his platform to advocate for inclusion and representation in the arts.
