"Between Cultural Labor and Political Struggle: Music and Class"
The 2024 MMRC Lecture
Am 14. Oktober 2024 fand die jährliche MMRC Lecture an der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien statt, die sich diesmal dem Thema "Between Cultural Labor and Political Struggle: Music and Class" widmete.
Angesichts der neuen Aufmerksamkeit, die der Begriff der Klasse im Kontext der Krisen des globalen Kapitalismus in vielen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen erfährt, lud das MMRC dazu ein, die Zusammenhänge zwischen Klasse und Musik aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln zu betrachten.
Die Ethnomusikologin und Anthropologin Ana Hofman fokussierte in ihrer Keynote auf das Verhältnis von Amateur*innen und Profis als einem der zentralen Schauplätze für die musikalische Aktualisierung der Ideen des Klassenkampfes, um einen konzeptionellen Rahmen für das Verständnis von (Un-)Gleichheit bereitzustellen. Die Kulturgeografin und Künstlerin Anjeline de Dios erweiterte diese Überlegungen in ihrer Response, indem sie die Zusammenhänge von Klasse und Race anhand der Erfahrungen philippinischer Musiker*innen aufzeigte, die in Freizeitlokalen in Asien mit westlichen Liedern auftreten. Komplettiert wurden die Vorträge durch einen musikalischen und aktivistischen Beitrag von Mata Granata (Kroatien/Wien), der über Klasse und Klassenkampf als geteilte Erfahrung von Menschen aus unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten rappt.

Würdigung
Musicologica Austriaca-Best Paper Award für Isabel Frey und Angelica Pinna
Wir gratulieren Isabel Frey und Angelica Pinna ganz herzlich zum Musicologica Austriaca Best Paper Award 2024!
Insgesamt wurden 12 Aufsätze zu vielfältigen Themen rund um Musik, Musiker*innen und Musikkulturen eingereicht, die (in einem breiten Verständnis) in einer Verbindung zu Österreich stehen. Die Beiträge wurden anonymisiert begutachtet. Dabei ist die Jury zum Entschluss gekommen, den Preis auf zwei qualitativ gleichermaßen hochwertige Beiträge aufzuteilen:

Angelica Pinna: "Austria's Memory Turn on Display: Music Exhibitions as Pathways out of Oblivion"

"'Yiddishists for Palestine': Diasporism and Solidarity through Twenty-First Century Yiddish Song"

Da sich viele junge Jüd*innen zunehmend von zionistischen Erzählungen entfremden, haben einige von ihnen in der internationalen jiddischen Musikszene einen Raum für Ausdrucksformen des Diasporismus und der Solidarität mit Palästinenser*innen gefunden. In ihrem Artikel untersuchen Isabel Frey und Rosza Daniel Lang/Levitsky vier jiddische Lieder des 21. Jahrhunderts, die sich auf den israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt beziehen und Solidarität mit Palästinenser*innen ausdrücken […]. Durch textliche, kontextuelle und musikalische Analysen und unter Rückgriff auf Theorien zu Diaspora und Diasporismus untersucht der Artikel die verschiedenen Arten, wie diese Lieder jüdische Solidarität mit Palästinenser*innen ausdrücken.

Vortrag "Dzamling Gar Song and Dance: A Khaita Manifesto" von Eva Leick
beim 7. International Seminar for Young Tibetologists, Oxford University
Der Vortrag "Dzamling Gar Song and Dance: A Khaita Manifesto" von Eva Leick im Rahmen des 7. International Seminar for Young Tibetologists, das vom 2.-6. September an der Oxford University stattfand, ist nun als Video online verfügbar! Leick skizziert darin die Rolle von Dzamling Gar Song and Dance innerhalb der Sammlung der Khaita – Joyful Dances und gibt Einblicke in ihren Entstehungsprozess. Außerdem geht Leick auf den Aspekt der Freude als sinnstiftendes und produktives Konzept für das gesamte Khaita-Projekt ein, indem sie die Tanzbewegungen hervorhebt und die Bedeutung der Texte mit körperlichem Ausdruck verbindet.

"SOUND OF WIEN OIDA – Immaterielles Kulturerbe postmigrantisch"
9. November 2024, 19:30, Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 47, 1130 Wien
Im Rahmen der Muslim*Contemporary 2024 lädt "Sound of Wien Oida" Musiker*innen, die für das postmigrantische und vielfältige Kulturerbe Wiens und Österreichs stehen, auf die barocke Bühne von Schloss Schönbrunn ein. Sie kommen aus unterschiedlichen Musiktraditionen und performen normalerweise an unterschiedlichen Orten, von Konzertsälen, über Straßenfeste bis zu Hochzeitsparties.
In Zusammenarbeit mit Salam Oida lädt das Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie (IVE) der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien ins Schönbrunner Schloßtheater, um (K)uns(t) und Wiens Vielfalt zu feiern, ganz nach dem Motto von Salam Oida: #wirfeiern(k)uns(t).
Kooperationspartner*innen sind das Institut für bildende Kunst der Akademie für Bildende Kunst Wien, die Österreichische UNESCO-Kommission sowie das MMRC.

"Between Cultural Labor and Political Struggle: Music and Class"
The 2024 MMRC Lecture
On 14 October 2024, the annual MMRC Lecture took place at mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts, this time dedicated to the topic "Between Cultural Labor and Political Struggle: Music and Class".
In view of the renewed attention that the concept of class is receiving across many scholarly disciplines in the context of the crises of global capitalism, the MMRC invited participants to consider the connections between class and music from different angles.
In her keynote, ethnomusicologist and anthropologist Ana Hofman focused on the relationship between amateurs and professionals as one of the key grounds for musical actualizations of the ideas of class struggle in order to provide a conceptual framework. Cultural geographer and artist Anjeline de Dios expanded on these reflections in her response by highlighting the connections between class and race through the experiences of Filipino musicians performing Western songs in leisure venues throughout Asia. The presentations were rounded off by a musical and activist contribution by Mata Granata (Croatia/Vienna), who raps about class and class struggle as a shared experience of people from different cultural contexts.

Musicologica Austriaca Best Paper Award goes to Isabel Frey and Angelica Pinna
We would like to congratulate Isabel Frey and Angelica Pinna on winning the Musicologica Austriaca Best Paper Award 2024!
A total of 12 essays were submitted on a variety of topics related to music, musicians and music cultures that are (in a broad sense) connected to Austria. The contributions were reviewed anonymously. The jury decided to divide the prize between two equally high-quality entries:

The article by Isabel Frey, Rosza Daniel Lang/Levitsky examines four twenty-first century Yiddish songs that refer to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and express solidarity with Palestinians […]. Through textual, contextual, and musical analysis, and drawing on theories of diaspora and diasporism, the article explores the various ways these songs express Jewish solidarity with Palestinians.

at the 7h International Seminar for Young Tibetologists, Oxford University
The lecture "Dzamling Gar Song and Dance: A Khaita Manifesto" by Eva Leick at the 7th International Seminar for Young Tibetologists, which took place from 2-6 September at Oxford University, is now available online as a video! Leick outlines the role of Dzamling Gar Song and Dance within the Khaita – Joyful Dances collection and gives insights into its creation process. Leick also addresses the aspect of joy as a meaningful and productive concept for the entire Khaita project, by emphasizing the dance movements and connect the lyrics' meaning with bodily expressions.

SOUND OF WIEN OIDA – Immaterielles Kulturerbe postmigrantisch
9 November 2024, 7.30PM, Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 47, 1130 Vienna
As part of the Muslim*Contemporary 2024, "Sound of Wien Oida" invites musicians who represent the post-migrant and diverse cultural heritage of Vienna and Austria to the baroque stage of Schönbrunn Palace. They come from different musical traditions and usually perform at different venues, from concert halls to street festivals and wedding parties.
In cooperation with Salam Oida, the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna invites you to the Schönbrunn Palace to celebrate art and Vienna's diversity. Cooperation partners are the Institute of Fine Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the Austrian UNESCO Commission and the MMRC.
