mdw structured doctoral programme

#13

What has happened over the last few months?

Diving into the final phase

With the research phase coming to an end for most of sdp's doctoral candidates, several have taken one more opportunity during the last months to present their dissertation projects before turning their attention to the writing phase: Peter Lell talked about “Practicing Afghan rubab – the transmission of knowledge of a musical tradition” at the 13th international doctoral workshop in ethnomusicology at the center for world music in Hildesheim, while Tianyu Jiang and Sophie Zehetmayer contributed with their talks “Experimenting sonic ties: the transdisciplinary collaborative practices of Shanghai community radio (shcr)” and “Affective bodies in time: synthesizing relations of musical and social rhythm” to isa science's programme. Furthermore, Juan Escobar Campos co-authored the paper “Who has access to a career in western classical music? Building a tool to evaluate intersectionality in barriers to music education and careers” that was published in Research Studies in Music Education at the beginning of this year.

The final phase is all about focused writing. For a kick start into this semester, the doctoral candidates spent the last week of February together at a writing retreat in Strobl. The BIFEB, where the retreat took place, provided a tranquil atmosphere for intensive writing sessions, interspersed with walks alongside the scenic Wolfgangsee to clear the head and exchange ideas. The time spent at the retreat was instrumental in advancing with the individual projects, developing work strategies for the upcoming months, and reflecting on the doctoral programme together. © private

Right after the writing retreat, everyone participated in the KdW 2024, mdw's "Research Conclave" (Klausur der Wissenschaften). Angelica Pinna, Juan Escobar Campos, Peter Lell and Tianyu Jiang contributed to the poster session, where they presented and discussed their dissertation projects with fellow researchers at the university. At the postercraze, Isabel Frey and Benyi Fox-Rosen (Music and Minorities Research Center) pitched their joint Artistic Research pilot project, also cofunded by the MMRC, called "Challenging the Theater of Memory: Yiddish Song beyond Kitsch and Stereotype“.

And now it's time to get back to writing.
