In diesem Newsletter möchten wir Sie zur nächsten Veranstaltung des MMRC einladen – dem Lecture-Concert „Challenging the Theater of Memory: Yiddish Song beyond Kitsch and Stereotype“ mit Benjamin Fox-Rosen und Isabel Frey.

Challenging the Theater of Memory: Yiddish Song beyond Kitsch and Stereotype
Die Aufführung jiddischer Musik im Nachkriegsdeutschland und -österreich ist mit einer Reihe von Erwartungshaltungen betreffend die jüdische Kultur verknüpft. In diesem Lecture-Concert setzen sich die jiddischen Musiker*innen und Forscher*innen Isabel Frey und Benjy Fox-Rosen mit diesen Erwartungen auseinander und stellen das so genannte „Theater der Erinnerung“ in Frage, in dem jüdische Rollen eingeschränkt sind und häufig instrumentalisiert werden, um sich in das kulturelle Narrativ der Dominanzgesellschaft einzufügen.
Die wissenschaftlich kommentierte musikalische Reise beginnt mit nostalgischen jiddischen Liedern, gefolgt von unbegleiteten Volksliedern, die aus ethnografischen Feldforschungen stammen. Der nächste Programmpunkt sind Partisan*innen- und Widerstandslieder aus der Shoah und die Aufführung endet mit neuer jiddischer Musik, die von den Künstler*innen selbst komponiert wurde. Die Veranstaltung findet in Zusammenarbeit mit dem CEU Culture Hub statt und wird auf Englisch abgehalten.

MMRC fördert Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen
Zwei Stellenausschreibungen
Das MMRC sucht zwei neue Mitarbeiter*innen: Ein*e neue*r Prae-Doc-Mitarbeiter*in soll sich am MMRC drei Jahre lang im Rahmen eines Dissertationsprojektes mit dem Themenbereich „Musikalische Praktiken von Rom*nja im europäischen Kontext“ auseinandersetzen.
Ein*e Post-Doc-Forscher*in wird sich im Rahmen eines eigenen Projektes konzeptionell mit dem für das MMRC zentralen Begriff der „Minderheit“ in seiner historischen und sozio-politischen Bedeutung in unterschiedlichen lokalen Kontexten auseinandersetzen.

Challenging the Theater of Memory: Yiddish Song beyond Kitsch and Stereotype
Performing Yiddish music in post-war Germany and Austria comes with a set of expectations and assumptions about Jewish culture. In this lecture-concert, Yiddish musicians and researchers Isabel Frey and Benjy Fox-Rosen confront these expectations, challenging the so-called "Theater of Memory" where Jewish roles are limited and often instrumentalized to fit into the broader dominant cultural narrative.
The musical journey begins with nostalgic Yiddish songs before moving to unaccompanied folk songs collected through ethnographic fieldwork. It continues with partisan and resistance songs from the Shoah and concludes with new Yiddish music by the artists themselves. The event is being organized in cooperation with CEU Culture Hub and will be held in English.
The event will take place on March 22, 2022, at 6:00 pm in the Fanny Hensel Hall at mdw. Registration via email is required. More information can be found here.
MMRC promotes junior researchers
Two job opportunities
The MMRC is looking for two new staff members: A pre-doctoral researcher will spend three years at MMRC working on a dissertation project in the topic area of "Musical Practices of Romani communities and individuals in the European Context".
A post-doctoral researcher, in the framework of their own project, will critically examine the concept of "minority", which is central to MMRC, in its socio-political meaning in different local contexts.
