QUEERING IDENTITY IN MUSIC: PERSPECTIVES FROM ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
Der politische Aktivismus verschiedener marginalisierter Bevölkerungsgruppen in Europa – aber auch weltweit – ist zunehmend von einer Infragestellung starrer Identitätskonzepte geprägt. Solche aktivistischen Ansätze hinterfragen politische Kämpfe, die auf traditionelleren Vorstellungen von Identität beruhen. Diese Entwicklungen schlagen sich auch in unterschiedlichen musikalischen Bereichen nieder. Anhand von Beispielen aus der LGBTQ+ Community und Minderheitencommunities in Indien beleuchtet die MMRC Lecture 2021 aus wissenschaftlicher, aktivistischer und künstlerischer Perspektive, welche Relevanz „Queering Identity“ für Minderheitenforschung und Minderheitenpolitik besitzt und welche Herausforderungen damit verbunden sind.
Thomas R. Hilder (Associate Professor in Ethnomusicology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim) wird die diesjährige Keynote zum Thema „Choral Activism, LGBTQ+ Rights, Queering Identity in 21st Century Europe“ halten, auf die die Respondenz „Does Identity Politics Unite or Divide us? Reflections on Social Justice and its Theorisations in Music Studies“ der Ethnomusikologin Rasika Ajotikar (British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow am Department of Development Studies, SOAS University of London) folgen wird. Eine Voguing-Performance des Kiki House of DIVE komplementiert den Diskurs künstlerisch.

QUEERING IDENTITY IN MUSIC: PERSPECTIVES FROM ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
Contesting fixed conceptions of identity increasingly informs political activism among several marginalized communities in Europe and beyond. Such approaches to activism challenge political struggles that are based on more traditional notions of identity. These developments are also operative in a range of musical practices. Drawing on examples from the LGBTQ+ community and minority communities in India, the 2021 MMRC Lecture sheds light on the relevance as well as the challenges of queering identity for minority studies and minority politics by bringing together scholarly, activist, and artistic viewpoints.
Thomas R. Hilder (Associate Professor in Ethnomusicology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim) will deliver this year’s keynote on "Choral Activism, LGBTQ+ Rights, Queering Identity in 21st Century Europe" which will be followed by the response "Does Identity Politics Unite or Divide us?
