Art Song and Oratorio
Was born in Rotterdam.
At the age of 24, Robert Holl won the first prize at the "International Singing Competition in s'Hertogenbosch". He then studied with Hans Hotter in Munich; In 1972 he won the first prize at the ARD competition Allda.
In 1973 he was engaged at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where he remained until 1975. In the following years Robert Holl appeared mainly as a concert singer and worked regularly with conductors such as Eugen Jochum, Karl Richter and Wolfgang Sawallisch. For some time now, he has been heard and seen again in opera productions. He has been a guest at the Vienna State Opera, the Brussels Opera and, since 1991, at the Zurich Opera House, with roles such as Sprecher and Sarastro ("The Magic Flute"), and Basilio ("Barber of Seville") working under the baton of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Welser- Möst, Karajan, Giulini, Leinsdorf, Bernstein, Chailly, Fedoseev and Pretre. At the German State Opera Berlin, Robert Holl worked with Daniel Barenboim as Landgraf Hermann ("Tannhauser"), Hans Sachs ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), Daland ("Der Fliegende Holländer") and Komtur ("Don Giovanni"). At the Viennese State Opera he sang the part of Landgraf Hermann and the König Marke ("Tristan und Isolde") under Christian Thielemann. Robert Holl will also be a guest at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, at the State Opera in Vienna, and at the Hamburg State Opera with large roles in Wagner's works, such as Landgraf Hermann, Hans Sachs or Königspark. Robert Holl has been singing Hans Sachs ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg") since 1996 at the Bayreuther Festival as and was highly praised for his performance. In the summer of 2004, he first performed the part of Gurnemanz in Bayreuth in a new production of Wagner's Parsifal under the artistic direction of Pierre Boulez. From 2008 he sang the King brand in "Tristan" in Bayreuth. In addition to his commitment to various opera houses, Robert Holl has made a name for himself as a successful concert soloist. He has sung in Europe, America and Japan along-side the most renowned conductors in Europe and the USA. Robert Holl is considered one of the great song-interpreters of our time. His great love is the German and Russian art-song repertoire. He has had a long collaboration with the record company Preiser being able to boast numerous song recordings. Song recitals regularly lead him to international music centers. Robert Holl himself composes songs and piano pieces, some of which have been published by the renowned music publisher Doblinger and published on CD. In addition to his work as a singer, he regularly teaches master classes. Robert Holl is also artistic director of "Schubertiaden" in Holland and Austria. In October 1990 Robert Holl was awarded the Kammersänger title. In March 1997 he became honorary member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, in July 1997 honorary member of the festival "Carinthischer Sommer". In 1998 he was appointed as a full-time professor for art-song(Lied) and oratorio at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Institute for Singing and Musical Theater).
In Austria, Robert Holl was awarded the Ehrenkreuz für Kunst und Wissenschaft 1. Klasse (Honorary Cross for Art and Science First Class).
