Stage Performance

Reto Nickler found his way to directing through various assistant positions such as, at the Stadttheater Bern, at the Theater Hagen and at the Vienna State Opera (debut:. "Die Regimentstochter" at the Theater Hagen) This was followed by the productions Lortzings "Zar und Zimmermann" in Hagen, Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" in Bologna, Furrer's "Die Blinden" at the Vienna Staatsoper, Henze's opera "Die Englische Katze" and "Pollicino" in Bern and Zurich, Rossini's "Guillaume Tell" in Geneva, Mozart's "Zauberflöte" in Santa Fe, Strauss' "Ariadne" in Seattle, d'Albert's "Tiefland" in Lucerne and "Salome" in Klagenfurt.

Since 1999, Reto Nickler is professor for stage performance and directing at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Vienna (Department of voice and musical theatre).

In the 2004/2005 season, Reto Nickler staged "Don Carlo"at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, "Tannhäuser" at the Stadttheater Hildesheim and "Iphigénie en Aulis" at the State Theatre Nuremberg.

In St. Gallen, he directed "Pique Dame" and the world premieres of Per Noergaard’s opera "Die Göttliche Kirmes" and Daniel Fueter’s "Stichtag" (libretto: Thomas Hürlimann).

At the Zurich Opera House Reto Nickler staged "Die Weisse Rose" and Janacek's "Jenufa". His production of Heinz Holliger's "Schneewittchen" was named “Uraufführung des Jahres 1999” ("World Premiere of the Year 1999").

Amongst his successes in recent years are Schoeck’s "Penthesilea" at the Lucerne Festival, "Guglielmo Tell" in the arena of Avenches, "La Bohème" at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Glanert’s "Scherz, Satire, Ironie und Tiefere Bedeutung" at the Prinzregententheater in Munich and "Dialogues des Carmélites" by Poulenc again at the Zurich Opera and the acclaimed staging of Schoenberg's "Moses und Aron" at the Vienna State Opera.

His last projects were "Elektra" (R. Strauss) at the Theater Lübeck and a staged version of the "Johannes-Passion" for the International Bach Days Zurich, and "Amahl and the Night Visitors" at the National Theatre Luxembourg.
